What is the word on the "Bonaventure Square," that has been long heralded? Or has it turned it turned into Western New York's version of the Xanadu project by exit 15 on the Jersey turnpike.

Wish I could help answer this question but I am just as frustrated as you. However, I did hear that SBU officials are planning on holding a ribbon cutting for "phase 1" sometime after graduation. I won't hold my breath. Over the last few years each deadline has passed without a shovel in the ground. This is a two or three phased project last I heard.
Let me say two items: 1 - this project will take place. The university is committed to this project. Bonas firmly believes this project will not only help the university but the community as well. Also, they want to have the "right mix" of businesses in this project. 2 - While committed to this project it won't proceed until the proper financing and capital is available. We can all appreciate the university's stance on both financing and getting the right businesses involved. We all have to remember the university has complete control over the development of this project. Their primary concern is to protect the interest and ideals of SBU and its commitment to Franciscan ideals.
A university the size of Bonas waits until most, if not all, financing is in place. Look at the Wm. Swan Business building. Most of the money is now in place for the project to begin. Once again, I share your frustration. Stay positive folks.
Hey, on some other good news, as was stated previously, Carl Paladino purchased the former Motel DeSoto. I have heard many rumors so I won't speculate. That said, Carl is more "deliberate" than Bonas when it comes to developing projects.
Also, Napoleon Engineering plans on expanding sometime in the near future. Scott Rotary Seals relocated its business from Hinsdale to Olean to a state of the art building. No word on increased employment but is stabilizes its workforce and gives them the opportunity to expand. Sol Epoxy, which bought a division of Henkel is doing very well. They plan on increasing employment slightly. Sol Epoxy is also working with the city of Olean in renovating Haggerty Field so the JCC women's softball team can use it as their playing field. It is also my understanding that Dresser-Rand is doing well calling back people who have been laid off. Additionally they are looking to adding skill machinists to its workforce.
In Ellicottville, Holiday Valley recently demolished their main chalet. It will be replaced by a newer, bigger and more modern chalet. Last year they added zip lines and a roller coaster ride like feature that has been very popular. The former Larimer and Norton building in Ellicottville was purchased and the developer plans on putting in a pizzeria and bowling alley in part of the building. More businesses will follow. Side note, the Larimer and Norton building used to make Louisville Slugger bats.
Finally, for beer enthusiasts, the Ellicottville Brewing Company, EBC, is expanding. The restaurant will be larger and they will build a small brewery. KaBob Cafe and it building has been moved behind Balloon's restaurant to make way for the expanding EBC. Holimont, one of the largest privately owned ski resorts, is expanding. More condo and ski runs are planned. If this project doesn't get off the ground this year definitely next year.
This is not big time job development with good paying jobs but at least development is taking place. Progress is being made - slowly.

Totally disagree with development is taking place. Replacing some of the jobs that were lost is not a development. A development would be adding additional jobs after those that were lost are filed. If SBU fired all all staff except the President but then hired back 20 people would you really consider job development?

Friar, thanks for the update. As you stated at least it is some progress taking place. Its better than no progress taking place. Some jobs being added is better than no jobs being added.

MSN Money recently rated the poorest county in New York as Bronx County. Apparently the Ally-Catt region is not the worst in NYS.

i tried to stay away but this to me makes no sense. Maybe i'm unaware of the politics of wny/cattaraug county but a jobs a job a job. Bonas and Seneca Nation seem to me to be the most prevalent in terms of job creation. And as much of the community might hate it, the party/college lifestyle is what's going to infuse the local economy. Bars, restaurants, etc for short term and that should allow production to come to the area. There's ample opportunity in the enchanted mountains. Just need the right people to execute.

There are bumper stickers around that say "NO FRACKING WAY".

This project is stalled by a financing shortfall, and the rolling recessionary problems. This is a major project in a very small town, with much risk involved here. There is still a large amount of disagreement inside the SBU groupings of interested parties over what development should take place, and where this future development should be constructed. Controversy continues among faculty, students, staff, local residents, and the alumni over such topics as Bonaventure Square, the Second Quad concept and the placement of the Swan Business Building. The beautiful sightlines of this campus need to be a high priority. As we move forward there needs to be open and continuing dialogue - like a a community wide convocation on these very important topics. It is essential to keep the lines of communications open with all constituency groups at SBU. These are matters of importance not just to the Trustees or the administration but to a much wider group of concerned SBU folks.

The second quad concept is the "plan" to close in the gap between the RC and Plassman with development. The concept would be to create the second quad, the first one being the area between Friedsam Library, De La Roche Hall, and Hickey. The second quad concept is very controversial because it would close out the outstanding from central campus and the second floor of the library to the Allegany River (athletic fields) and the Chipmonk Valley to the south. The problem is that again there has not been enough dialogue with interested members of the constituent groups that comprise the SBU community. Placement of the Swan bldg is the case in point....it blocks the gorgeous valley view. This campus has some very unique sightlines and that to be taken into consideration.
