Interesting that several of the recruits you mentioned were brought in by an administration found guilty of a recruiting violation. Admittedly no violations have been alleged to include them.
I've also said why I credit Andrew Nicholson's signing to luck more than outstanding fall recruiting.
Call it a change in the times, call it whatever you want. But when programs like Dayton (4/5 scholarships to give in 2012) and UMass (3 scholarships to give in 2012) aren't filling them all in the fall, you wonder why.
I think it's because the game has changed. Big school coaches are looking at more players. And whether it's realistic or not, they're holding out for offers from big schools.
Why am I so hard on Malcolm Eleby? Firstly he was the highest rated recruit in the 2007 class (graded 79 by ESPN). I heard Schmidt call him the hardest worker on the team. He was in the gym more than any other player.
On the floor he was a tenacious defender. But he wasn't an A-10 PG. I loved his size and work ethic, but he was a turnover machine with no scoring ability at the basket. And he wasn't an outside threat either.
More fall signings that didn't work out: Delonte Taylor Matt Morgan David Fox Brian Gibbs Isiah Carson
Oh and by the way, Michael Lee signed his NLI MAY 18, 2004.

I still don't understand the point of bringing up Eleby. Is it because he was a failed fall signings? Does that prove some point? Are you implying that because one player failed, the coaching staff should discontinue trying to land solid fall signings because they will never amount to anything?
Gibbs and Taylor were picked up in late August to play that year. Those are called summer signings. Sorry
Other spring/summer signings: Hillary Haley Greese Thomas Terron Diggs Ivan Kovacevic Ray Blackburn Lewis Leonard Jermaine Calvin Orion Garo

I'm suggesting that when we settle for players ready to snap at an offer, we are selling ourselves short.
I'm comparing Eleby with more successful point guards like Adegboye and Kloof who we had to wait for. My contention this whole time is that we should continue to aim for better recruits (fringe players close to big-school talent). If they choose to sign in the fall great! But if the staff lowers its aim as some suggest, it'll sell itself short.
They landed a nice recruit this fall, now those impatient for results would have the coaches spending their time going after the safe players who aren't as talented.
It's great to get everything you want right away, but its not how most mid-majors operate these days. I can deal with Derrick Millinghauses, Eli Carters and a longer wait in the spring if it gets me Adegboye/Kloof instead of Eleby.

Since when did the Jim Baron regime have a recruiting violation? Am I missing something here?
Also, Michael Lee was recruited by Anthony Solomon. I don't think that's a very good example.

Michael Lee was in response to adolph saying he was a fall signing. A few of the other recruits mentioned were VBK's.

What ever happened to Kedar Edawards? It seemed so little ago it was between us and Dayton. Now it seems like there's no news on him at all.

Adolph,
I dont care when / where the heck Schmidt gets his players.. may / sept, olean / china who cares as long as they are good.
Schmidt signs good players. Proven by the Bonnies Atlantic 10 championship title that you said would never, ever happen.
Please stop your complaining you broken record - Thanks.

Of course it doesnt matter when and where as long as the players are good. The problem tastylicks is that when you are continually fishing into the summer you are going to get burned way more than you find a good one. That's the issue. Our recruiting for the fall is now taking a hit because instead of making contacts with recruits for the fall we are still looking for people to sign this season. Coach made it work last season by getting Kloof very late and getting Youssou as well but the same pattern occurred in that we only signed one in the fall and are scrambling towards the end of the spring signing session. I will give Coach the benefit of the doubt (something I have not done in the past) but this pattern has to change for long term sustainable success.

Both sides of this argument are right. The unfortunate truth behind the whole problem stems back over the past several years, even prior to Schmidt. Fact is that every year we have been losing guys early spring that have either signed in the fall or were current players leaving the team. That forces you to devote more resources in that spring and thus puts you behind on next falls recruiting. However, I think that trend is about to change as I have noticed for the first time in a long time Bona's being listed and having contact with recruits for next year's class. However, even though we are contacting them earlier, that does not mean that some of these recruits are going to wait out their senior or prep season to try to draw a better offer (I know Bonas is the best), but realistically if they can draw a Big Least, ACC or SEC offer, they would probably take it. What hurts us even more are the increasing 1 and done players.

magnus, another possible explanation of our early interest in 2013 recruits is an NCAA rule change. This year, coaches are allowed an earlier evaluation period than in the past.
