 Did We Land a Steal
« Thread Started on Jun 7, 2012, 9:12am »

Looking at the press release from gobonnies on Dion Wright and seeing the comments his coach made about him....did we land an absolute steal this late in the 2012 class?? Now I'm not saying he is going to come in and give us 10 and 10 every night but with how his coach said he was a leader and one of the programs best players in the last 10-15 years, a program that graduated Josh Chilldress, had me wondering if we brought in a potential star in Dion Wright

njbona02 gave a very encouraging account of Wrights game over on the Bevel. I'll let him post it here if he wants or go check it out there....

Remember who we are??? We are the mother f'ing Bonnies, thats who we are! We can beat anybody left on our schedule and even though we lost our chances earlier in the year, we showed we can hang with teams on the road. Will we make the NCAA? Chances are we will not but its not cause of who we are. Its cause we just quite didnt play well enough. Beat St Louis! Beat UMass! Beat everybody!!

yes Wright sounds like a very, very solid player. If he puts on 20 lbs we could have a monster. Not a lot of 6-7 wings in the A10 who are very skilled and very bouncy. Almost sounds like a bigger version of Conger/Johnny Hall.

Oh also Dion played at the same high school as Josh Childress and his coach said he's a very similar talent.

For those who don't know Childress played for Stanford and was Pac 10 player of the year, Tourney MVP and an AP First team All American his final year at Stanford(his junior season).

If Wright really is the same type of talent we got a huge steal and he will take minutes away from our veterans immediately.

I posted this in the Welcome Dion Wright thread but I will add it here being that it belongs in this thread....

My cousin is a varsity high school bball coach in LA and I emailed him asking if he had ever seen Dion Wright. Here is what he emailed me back...

Wow! Funny you should ask. We lost in the semifinals of the playoffs. If we would've won (which we should have) we would have played them in the championship. I scouted them a couple of times. Hes a stud! Plays inside & out. Very smart, athletic, & was dominant. Needs to add a little bulk, but a great addition for the Bonnies. He was player of the year in our Division. Their coach & I really wanted to play in the Finals but our top shooter hurt his back in the 1st quarter & we lost by 3. Dions younger brother can flat out play too. Hes a point guard. Maybe you get him next year.....

This whole thing is really interesting. If we did get a steal, was he such a late bloomer that there was no midmajor or higher interest during the fall period? Did we see something that no other staff saw? If he turns out to be great, did Schmidt "get lucky" again, and will the board thus continue to insist that picking up these late additions is a dangerous game that MUST bite us eventually.

It's getting hilarious and a little sad watching the detractors spin negativity no matter how many great things happen. If these guys pan out for the future, the old men shaking their fists on the porch at nothing may even fade away evenutally. At least until the next time we lose to Canisius.

I think that I read that Wright was getting a look from Pepperdine at one point but I am not sure.

I modified my post because I do not want this thread to turn into an argument about recruiting. Lets just enjoy a possible diamond in the rough.

I hate to pee in your Wheaties - let's save this topic for the 2015-2016 season. We will know for sure then. Too many what if's yet.

Dion has said that Portland State, Santa Clara & Stanford showed interest in addition to Oklahoma State.
