It had been rumored on the Bandwagon that Darius Stevens (6’5”/185, Grade 89, & ranked # 42 SF) would be a Bonnie this Fall & THEN rumored he would be going to Iowa State where his Dad is the 2nd highest scorer. His interest in Iowa State is quite natural in light of his dad’s career there, his mom’s fond memories of the school & the fact that his deceased dad's brother in law (Grayer) is an assistant coach at ISU. That's quite a hook. Grayer is the school's all time leading scorer & played in the NBA for 9 years. Darius’ mom Sanita, is the PR person for the Gary, Indiana school system & was instrumental in her son choosing LaLumiere prep school. He played there as a 4th year senior & was MVP. No doubt she is playing a significant roll as is Grayer in Darius finalizing his decision & this point there is no pressing deadline date.
The situation at Iowa State is that they have 1 ship to give but may be leaning toward banking it after adding 6 new players. The latest being Chris Babb from Penn State (will red shirt this coming season & have two years eligibility). Their new coach Fred Hoiberg has never been a Head Coach but is hoping to turn around the last 4 losing seasons & player exodus every spring under Coach McDermott (just signed at Creighton). His 10 year’s of playing in the NBA was a big factor cited by the 2011 verbal he got from PG Anthony Adunsi, who has aspirations of getting to that level (aspirations they all have). BTW, Charles Boozer, a fan favorite of the Cyclones, is leaving the school due to legal issues stemming from an incident earlier this month.
In all the current ISU chatter about filling that final ship Darius’ name hasn’t come up. Yet the Cyclone faithful are well aware of him. At age 15 he played in a memorial game in honor of his dad at the University with an attendance of 4,000.
Bandwagon rumors have him definitely NOT coming to Bona but with all the uncertainty that surrounds recruits after the May 19th deadline, nothing is a certainty. Meanwhile there are players out there that would be a good fit. As JP said, I'm waiting for some good news to billow in the wind.
