I probably have less information on this recruit or that prospect than anyone on this board. I would be hard pressed to evaluate who can or can't play at this level. I am looking at the big picture regarding this staff. They have brought in kids that can play and who seem to fit in with what is going on. Does it really matter whether the right kid signs in Oct., April or July as long as he fits the program and school? We will have our recruits by Sept. That is what matters. Would be nice to have locked up some All American candidates but that is not who we are. We will be a factor next year if we go with what we have. Stay positive!

Jake vs. Open ship I would have kept Jake for his 5 fouls alone. I assumed Coach had the players ready to sign......A bird in the hand yada yada

Great dds. Jake had his opportunities. Let's give another kid a chance to do something.

If you don't use the ship this season, then letting Jake go makes NO sense, because it would be open next season anyways
|
Hey haters, guess what? Recruiting is complete, and coach did a great job... :P |

Sometimes less is more, but in this case I generally agree with you.

Jake wanted to leave because he was not going to get any playing time... Why make a guy stay that does not want to be here?

To my point, it isn't always just about filling the roster. If he wanted to stay, he had no personal or team issues, and we're not going to fill ships, keep him. If not, give him his release.

"Make a guy stay"? Didn't he get his degree?

There's also a little issue of the 13th amendment.

Well, early in May I started this thread about the lack of recruiting news. I really could not stand the dearth of anything tangible while other schools were signing and announcing players. I don't believe I ever criticized Coach in this thread, just expressed how nerve wracking the silence was for me. Now we think we know the three recruits (assuming Runs is formalized). I believe it is impossible to project whether the three will be poor, mediocre, good or great A-10 players. I will be surprised if any of them have a major impact this upcoming year, because the unusual depth will allow Schmidt to revert to his deep seated aversion to relying upon Frosh. I think Runs is likely to see the most minutes of the three, as Youssou is very prone to foul trouble, and could not play an entire game anyway. Reports say that Toupane and Wright are very slender, but so was 44 when he arrived. Basically, it is a "wait and see" class, which is certainly far better than the sky is falling scenario some (including me)were fearing. My nerves are soothed; I should be more patient, and like Charlie Brown about to kick the football yet again, I am feeling optimistic about next year's Bonnies. As a footnote, I will opine that I believe the single biggest unknown is whether Simmons can play to his pre-injury form. If so, this could be a surprisingly good squad. They may play more like the nationally ranked Bona teams of the Stith era, which took every opportunity to fast break and called plays using their own lingo. Those are the exciting and successful teams that made me a fan for life. Brown Indians forever!

This debate could go on and on, but does anyone definitively KNOW whether Jake chose to leave with his degree in hand, or whether he wanted to stay for a final year of eligibility, but was forced out by the coach not renewing his 'ship for a 4th year? Because it seems to me that the only debate possible is if he was not renewed - then if the 'ship is not filled we get to question whether we'd be better off with Jake as opposed to an open spot on the roster resulting from an unfulfilled hope of finding a replacement in this year's recruiting class. If the decision was Jake's - that's the end of it - you just can't (and shouldn't) force the kid to put in another year if he has earned his degree.

I don't know about that. Last year, we were pretty loaded and Ndoye and Gathers both made substantial contributions. If they are good, they'll see plenty of playing time. Besides, there's the issue of injury and so far Simmons hasn't been able to avoid it for long. Bothe he and Davenport had major injuries and we simply don't know what they'll bring to the table. I'll be surprised if at least one of the freshman doesn't make a significant impact.
