Delmar Harrod's alma mater in the Charm City. Class of 1976, then won an NIT title as a skinny frosh in 1977.

Lots of offers and involvement with recruits. Seems like the Nicholson effect has taken hold. Glad to see the staff involved with so many.

(Even though they weren't the best of friends, always...) 'Will NEVER forget the sight of that 82 foot shot going in from behind the Niagara basket to tie the game before we won it in OT (with another Delmar clutch shot contributing)! Awesome!

Good post Coach. And TM, Harrod must have been a skinny sophomore in that '77 NIT championship season. Didn't he graduate in '79 before we got there in '80?

I'd rather have a decent 4 yr big than a one and done.

If he had made the shot from behind the basket it wouldn't have counted. He made the shot from the foul line on the Niagara side of the court.

I would have guessed he was 2 years behind me, but then he would have missed the NIT entirely.

I graduated in '81. I believe Delmar was a very skinny freshman in the NIT year. I entered the year after the NIT, in the fall of '77, and Delmar was a very skinny sophomore that year. (6'8", maybe 170 lbs.) I believe Tim Waterman was also in that class. Sanders and Hagan were juniors in the NIT year, seniors in 77/78 (as of course was the unforgettable Barry Atkinson). Not sure if Nick Urzetta was a junior or senior that year. The incoming class my freshman year was Earl Belcher, Brian West, Alphonso Jones and Mark Spencer.

According to the 2005-06 year book. Delmar Harrod played 23 games as a freshmen in 76-77 averaging 4.2 ppg. As a junior he averaged 18.2. As a senior in 79-80 he averaged 14.8ppg and 9.1rbs.

Yup - Belcher and the rest came with you Bart. Pretty good class. Now that you put it in a timeframe, I can remember Delmar being around the year before those other 4. I and some other 3rd West guys once went to the drive in in Allegany with Delmar coming along. I'd rather not admit to what was playing that night (not that the titles made any difference).
Waterman and Urzetta graduated with me in 79.

Second skinniest player I've ever seen live, Manute Bol was #1. Delmar was tough though.

Delmar showed what heart and smarts could accomplish. He was MAYBE 170 at 6'8" with pipecleaner arms and legs. Zero muscle (sorry Del), but played smart and tenacious. Not particulary athletic and not strong at all, but a terrific defender and effective offensive player. Didn't back down from anybody. I particularly remember him giving Louis Orr and Dale Shakelford, two very good Syracuse players fits with his defense.

My favorite memory of Delmar was him hitting the shot over Roosevelt Bouie in the ECAC game in Rochester with about 12 seconds left for the 70-69 Bonnies win!!! Then we beat VCU three days later in the championship game on Waterman's buzzer beater to advance to the tourney. What a week! Maybe my favorite until the A-10 tourney this year.
