 Exhibition Reports?
« Thread Started on Nov 7, 2009, 11:23am »

Somewhat surprised no one has posted anything yet....

The score was a little close for my liking, looks like Nicholson/Hall are about as expected...anybody have some details about how the game went, who looked good etc...

I did catch a picture of Nicholson...he looks a lot bigger and more mature physically than last year.

MANSFIELD was a good team to play because they match up fairly similar to CLEVELAND ST except CSU's frontcourt is alot like SBU's with one exception. CLEVELAND ST has 6-9 280 lbs AARON POGUE along with experienced guard play just like MANSFIELD had 6-6 284 YUSEF CARR and their experienced guards. As big of a game ANDREW had last night I thought too many times on defense and offense that CARR was getting the better positioning but due to ANDREW's reach and better athleticism CARR did could not stop him. There were things I liked about DA'QUAN last night, his rebounding and his defense on CARR when ANDREW was sitting but DA'QUAN still seems awkward on offense. Personally I did not think ANDREW looked noticeably bigger but pretty much everyone else I talked to or read seems to thinks so. COACH SCHMIDT stayed with his starters and OGO more in the 2nd half. I would have liked to have seen more of CONGER, LEONARD, & JAKE H.

I would think that Andrew is sore today after being pounded on by 286 pound Yuseff Carr. The wide guy is on the coach’s preseason All Conference team due to his dominant inside game. Coming from Transit Tech in NYC he is like a locomotive having added 18 more pounds to his girth since last season. Glad to see that Carr fouled out & not Andy. Good prep for Cleveland State’s big guy Pogue.

The bona blog just recently posted some thoughts on that game. Were more of quick hitters than a thorough review.

A solid article by Ryan or is it Ian?

1. "Superstar" is a perfect description of Andrew's game against Mansfield.

2. Ryan states of DaQuan "we may have found our 4" is being overly optimistic. He was solid on the boards, but seeing him struggle with finishing against a D-II team is a concern. In another thread, Sipo compared DaQuan to DeLancy. There were many similarities: trouble to finish, ugly moves in the paint, trouble hanging on to the ball, but like DeLancy he was solid rebounder.

3. Ryan accurately spoke of Matthews taking caring of the ball and making assists along with his troubles of making a basket. This team needs someone to hit shots from the perimeter.

4. Unlike Ryan, I do not see Jonathan's shot improving. Because of his shot, Jonathan is strictly a transition player and struggles in a half court offense. The team and especially Jonathan looked great when they pressed Mansfield at the 10 minute mark of the first half and turned the game into a full court game.

5. Biggest negative for me was the struggles of the team in the 2nd half. Unlike the first half, Schmidt basically played the starters in the 2nd half. Instead of building the lead with the starters, team only tied Mansfield with 45 points.

All good points Chuck. I believe last year Mansfield outscored us in the 2nd half. I noticed how fast they got back on D to stop our transition scoring opportunities. Jon taking two treys & another with his foot touching the 3 point line are bad percentage shots. Shinning spots were obviously Andrew's play & to a far lesser extent the solid play of Ogo who will get better through the season. Our half court D needs work. Glad to see that Brett was not wearing a sling.

I thought we gave Mansfield a lot to feel good about. Outside of the rebounding, I found it very troubling that our guards had a tough time keeping their men in front of them. But in spite of the score this is why you have scrimmages, hopefully coach learned some things he would not of seen in practice and the guys will pick up the effort!

That is correct, but last year Bonnies played a much better game against Mansfield. Team was up by 26 at halftime and won the game by 23.

Some surprises. My basis for these are the posts from the board, and the expectations based on these.

Cook was discussed as the last man off the bench, going to transfer, not agressive......so today he starts, and does OK. If he can provide the D'Lancy Carter role, sub for Andrew, and do some of Thomas' role.....then he is my biggest surprise.

Next is Lewis Leonard. Many of us had him starting, so he plays only 7 minutes, gets outclassed on defense. Is coach hiding him as a surprise to Cleveland State, or have we misjudged him. We need him as a scorer.

I predicted Matthews to get around 25 minutes a game, so he plays 33 against Mansfield.

Davenport, who I thought would either start or be the 6th man, had trouble with perimeter defense. He was supposed to be an outstanding defender, coming from Moeller with that reputation.

My biggest worry is the 4/5 positions. Andrew is not the concern, but can we get solid minutes from Cook, Jake and Brett....if we can then we'll have a good season, otherwise Andrew will be doubled and tripled, and with weak outside shooting, we could be challenged.

So, it's only an exhibition, and on Friday, it's for real. By the way, at Halftime I bought one of the packages, the video was very good, I just wish THE VIDEO AND AUDIO could be synched.

I think DAVENPORT is kind of getting a bad rap here in a way. I agree his perimeter defense was not very good but I thought he did very well on the 1-2-2 full court zone trap when he was the defender out front. He was very active causing MANSFIELD alot of problems.

Leonard showed zero on the offense. Why no offense? Conger a true frosh showed more on offense made a nice three later had a nice 15 footer negated by a foul. His shot looked very fluid. Same for House confident jumper made nice lift on a dunk negated by off the ball foul.House did get pushed out when rebounding. Nice upside for these players. If I'm Leonard and had a chance to play after sitting out a year, I would have come in with more energy.

You guys are kidding about House right? He is about as slow as they come. He will not be a factor in the A-10 season. Leonard will be OK. He Just needs some time. Leonard will be much more of a factor on this team than House will.

Leonard needs more time? You mean 2 years of Juco + 1 redshirt year he needs more time? I'm sorry House has more upside to me 6-9 centers are not always fast.

I'm not talking about foot speed I'm talking about his movements in the game. He moves like some of the 80 year olds in the Reds. Very deliberate and predictable. I think that he can contribute eventually, but I don't think we get much from him this year.
I think Leonard needs more playing time before I am ready to give up on him. 7 minutes in the scrimmage and already he is done? He is a scorer and he will find his niche.
