Steve Watson was and is a tremendous positive influence on the Bona athletic program, much of which was in shambles when he arrived. He rallied the staff, made some key appointments - Schmidt and Crowley(he reaffirmed his position here after some controversy), got the BAF moving, drove the movement for improved athletic fields, and allowed us to re-enter the NCAA tournaments. He needs a raise now, not later, so we can retain him. Make him happy Board of Trustees or you are going to lose him. This guy and his outstanding family lives and breathes Bona, he needs to be right here to guide us into the future. Get it done.

BBB- Oakland is a state school which is working to move up in the D1 world. State school = more money for Watson and for athletic programs...also, Oakland is in the heart of the MAC and Big 10 which are both logical "next moves" up the ladder. The Big 10 network is absolutely killing it...they added Rutgers and UMaryland for TV viewership..strong talk is that big 10 is after UVA and Miami as they both match up well with Big 10 academics anda would also help to lock down TV sets...down the road, the next chess moves are the breakup of the ACC, with the better academic schools headed to Big 10 and the rest to the SEC. Watson worked at eastern Michigan and Dayton and played at bowling green..so the Midwest is familiar turf...also, where is mrs Watson from ? Watson has done a great job at SBU..but at his age/stage of his career, it has to be difficult trying to get blood out of the rock for any of his programs..as I stated a while back, one can only tap the marra, quick, and Molinari families on the shoulder for $$$ so many times...cant blame him for wanting to go somewhere where the $$ flows a bit more smoothly.

The part about him wanting more money and possibly getting it at Oakland is logical... The part where you go on about the Big 10 and their tv network is irrelevant and a head scratcher. That's nice that they are doing well - but Oakland U is never going to see any of those dollars and Watson has a long ways to go from Oakland to the Big 10 - if that's truly his thinking, to move to Oakland because it makes him closer to a Big 10 job, then he's making a big mistake (I doubt that is what he's thinking though). He's likely closer to a Big 10 job jump from here at Bonas! Lots of reasons why people look at moving jobs.. could be family reasons, could be money although I hope that's not the case because Watson is a great asset to our school, could just be that he wants a new challenge... or it could be nothing, really and he's happy here.

They don't have a large footprint and wouldn't command a TV market well. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the school I have heard mentioned with UVA. Both are 'public Ivys' with large alumni bases and fan support in large metro areas. Not to mention Delany is a UNC guy. UVA and UNC would lock down Northern VA/DC and would add the whole state of North Carolina. With the divisions that would be used it wouldn't make travel too difficult for most programs in the conference.

Watson very well might get more money from Oakland. It might be a good career move for him. Why would you talk about the Big 10 Network in relation to Oakland? Is Lemoyne killing it because of the success Syracuse has in the ACC? Oakland hosted Michigan State this season (at the Palace) which is more than Lemoyne or SBU can do with Syracuse. Oakland may allow for more opportunities to work with Big Ten and MAC administrators. I have noticed a lot of instances where administrators have moved to positions that, at best, would be called lateral moves and it has helped propel their careers. SBU is a difficult situation since it has the least amount of resources in the conference. He could go in to Oakland, with the lessons learned at SBU, and make a big impact that could get him picked up as an associate AD at a Big Ten program or the top spot in the MAC. With all that said, sometimes people just interview elsewhere to see what offers are on the table, see what they are worth, and if that is the case he may not be going anywhere.

probably wasn't clear in my writing...Oakland is in the heart of big 10 turf --watson would get an immediate bump in $$ with the move to oakland...knowing Watson fairly well...he is analytical--always thinking a step or two ahead..big ten has momentum, the big 10 network has developed larger than anyone thought possible--to the point that the member schools have suggested to the commish that he gets some depth in the upper levels of the big 10 management structure which = opportunities for a brighter, pleasantly aggressive guy like Watson.. the Miami to big 10 connection is donna Shalala who spent time at univ of Wisconsin--she has enough political currency to make things happen...the big 10 commish is working very aggressively to expand..that is the madate

Agreed. I am in NYC and have only an arms-length perspective on doings in the athletic department. But it sure as hell looks like Watson has done an outstanding job. It seems as if coach Schmidt has received some nice, well deserved, salary bumps lately. If Watson hasn't gotten any love($), I imagine he must feel slighted. I would. He's been an absolute home run for Bonas. I hope they can work it out to keep him.

Pinnum--word out here in the Midwest is that unc was a target until their hoops/football academic scandal....big 10 backed off big time..talk about life being about timing. also have heard today that NCAA may reopen that case as more "student-athletes" may be willing to talk to the NCAA investigators....stay tuned !

By all means give him a raise; he's been a huge component in the success of the last several years. Having said that, if he's the one who gets the job at Oakland, money probably wouldn't keep him here. Oakland has seemed for several years to be a school looking to make a big splash in college sports and they have resources that we don't and couldn't compete with.
