Just some final thoughts on the above mentioned threads. It seems to me we are pretty much all in agreement that we have a great deal of compassion and love for SBU. It certainly is a special place where I wish more people would appreciate. That said perhaps I can sum up our thoughts and then move on to something else as we get ready for fantasy football:
1. A plan to increase enrollment. It is my understanding the university is currently evaluating ways to improve marketing and increasing enrollment. Expanding in non-traditional areas where population is increasing is certainly a good start. I did see a list, posted on Twitter, of the names of new students and their hometowns. Just a guesstimate on my part but I will say at least 1/4 to 1/3 come from outside our traditional targeted areas. Arizona, California, Indiana, Virginia to name a few states.
2. The introduction of new majors. Suggestions such as engineering, computer related professions and healthcare field were primary areas of interest while cyber-accounting,pre-law, economics, and criminal justice were honorable mentions. Once again, it is my understanding the university is looking to expand its number of majors. This may be accomplished through the proposed "merger" between Bona and Hilbert, but also through expanding and utilizing what they already have. They are looking to do this in a cost effective manner.
3. Upgrade facilities - this is ongoing process. During the summer and into next spring they plan on updating the campus to the tune of $10 million.
4. Sports programs/Facilities - perhaps men's lacrosse should be added but what men's sport would be dropped? We need to finish the playing fields project, especially for women's softball, there is a huge need for a new pool as well as new tennis facilities.
5. Creation of new alliances with high schools and related programs. Seems to me the university should hook up with Franciscan high schools and develop a plan on getting those kids on our campus by offering something - discount on tuition, online courses through the university.
5. Consider revising Clare course offerings?? Pros/Cons to this one.
6. Never, ever abandon our Franciscan roots!!!! This is what makes Bonaventure special.
Not to sound like a broken record but it is my understanding university administration is aware of the above. Not because of the Bandwagon but because as they plan and project towards the future these are topics they have discussed. Bonas has always been slow to change for various reasons. I do get the feeling there is a sense of urgency to change some things but not after completing their due diligence.
Time for a new topic!
