I realize this is old news but was watching a show this morning where Rashad McCants was interviewed regarding the allegations of academic fraud at UNC. He claims he made deans list and never attended a class. Sounds like the program could be headed for some heavy penalties if this proves to be accurate information. Apparently, the internal investigation findings will be released today. Isn't the NCAA suppose to be doing the investigating rather than the university? A respected attorney from a big firm (Cadwalder Wickersham and Taft) is doing an "independent" study which I am assuming the university is paying for. Is it just me or does this whole thing seem to reek of a coverup?

I will answer my own question after reading the article on ESPN that just broke. Apparently the NCAA has not opened an investigation. Seems a little strange to me...I suppose once they straighten out FSU football they can turn their eyes on UNC basketball. Amazing how they ran Tark out of the game with UNLV but put on kid gloves when dealing with two ACC programs. Has Dicky V mentioned anything regarding his good buddies Dean Smith and Roy Williams and this mess they find themselves in. Probably not.

The NCAA & UNC have been trying to make this go away for a year or so. The BIG schools always seem to get away with this ******** because they bring in big $ for their conference & the NCAA & ESPN. And tools like Dickie V will defend them while dumping heaping piles of **** on little guys like SBU.

You got that right az63. When I remember Dicky V with his "shame on you St. Bonaventure" line when interviewed after welding gate hit I just could not believe how big a hypocrite he had become. Totally lost any respect I had left for that shmo.

Have two cousins who own a restaurant in Chapel Hill and the entire community ( no surprise ) claims that McCants is delusional and has made the entire story up. Personally I Like Bill's assessment especially his shots at Dickie the Mouth.

Sounds like the town must think the lawyer and his report are delusional too. The bigger question in my mind is what the NCAA does from here.

Probably nothing as they fall into the separate "elite" programs that accumulates big bucks for the NCAA along with an over zealous fan base that will do anything to be number one. Sound familiar John Calipari, the rules are not for these guys.

Mentioning the mentality of the people in town in Chapel Hill just reminds me of those in State College. It is never their fault and always a witch hunt. That is one of the problems with fandom...
For the record: "shame on SBU" was accurate. I would rather lose and have an honorable program than break the rules for a competitive advantage.
But as bad as I think the SBU situation was, I do think this UNC incident is much worse. Educating students is the purpose of the institution. I actually like to give schools autonomy when it comes to the methods of educating their students but they should be open about the practices so that they are able to be held accountable and athletes should be held to the same standard. If UNC is failing (or blatantly neglecting) to educate their students, there should be an investigation by the state regents, state legislature, Dept. of Ed, AAU, and regional accreditation body.

unfortunately, the ncaa has a long history of selective enforcement and punishment...the rules apply to everyone, but not to me as i know what is best for you ! ESPN recently aired a 30 on 30 on the BC hoops betting scandal...laid it all out there. But i had to laugh as northwestern was snared in cheating scandals in both football and hoops in the mid to late 90s as both NU teams had guys who were throwing games. 2 money generating teams at 1 school in a major conference...havent heard about that shameful scandal in a long time..Me thinks it is not only the elite conferences, but the elites in the media who chose to selectively dig into the schools who should be exposed and punished.

Doesn't mean Roy didn't know anything because I'm sure he did, but you need to tell the whole story with those numbers. This is much larger than an athletic scandal, as thousands of non-athletes were enrolled in those classes as well over the years.

I haven't had a chance to read the whole article..it did mention that this had been going on for two decades...I agree that UNC as a whole should be in deep s%^&, but I am more interested in seeing how the athletic dept in general and football and hoops specifically are penalized....I get that sbu broke the rules with the welder, but this is widespread, department and university wide fraud...and don't give me the old sargent Schultz, " I know nothing" BS...a coach is responsible for what goes on under his watch..
