NBA kicks off tonight. For Drew, it is likely a make or break season. I've read reports saying he needs to go to the D-League and he could be waived...hard to hear....I posted some further thoughts on Drew's third season below... thebonablog.wordpress.com/

Cat, don't think so. I believe Rookie deals in the NBA are 3-4 year deals and the Magic simply picked up his option. I think they have one more year to pick up, next year, if they want, if they don't pick it up he's a FA. I would think if he doesn't play well this year they will decline his 4th year option next summer.

He can't be assigned by the Magic to the D-League because he's now in his third season. He would have to voluntarily sign with the lower league, which would be unlikely if he can just play overseas.
Edit: Andrew could consent to an assignment but there are better options available.

I have to admit, I was confused when I read it, though and double checked that it wasn't an old article from last year. It appeared to be something new. I didn't realize there was a 4th year option. The article said the team picked up options for 4 players. Here it is: Extensions:

Orlando did pick up his option for a 4th year at the rookie scale which means his contract Is guaranteed for next season and he will make just under 2.5M.

Recall SBU being rated as one of the best values in the Northeast? Whenever I see those rankings I can't help but think of Andrew Nicholson skewing recent graduate salaries. 400 recent grads with one person making $1.4MM out of the gate gives a nice boost of $3,500 for the average starting salary and that's assuming all 400 report. (I would imagine they remove him from the equation but I still find it funny to think about at such a small school.)

Back in 1970 I used to console myself with the thought that my class' "average salary" was probably the highest in the country. Bob Lanier cruised around Olean with his freshly signed NBA contract while I was also feeling rather prosperous with a $2400 per year grant from the National Science Foundation and that healthy $50 per month stipend for signing up for ROTC at WVU.

No playing time on opening night with 8 minutes left. O'Quinn has played 19 minutes.

Drew didn't get any playing time tonight while O'Quinn played 21 min going 2 of 8 for 4 pts, 5 asts, 4 fouls, and 2 rebs. But I'm sure his defense was all-world and easily made up for his offensive ineptness. Why did they tied him up and waste another year of his career by exercising the option??

This situation is most typical for this franchise. They really don't have a clue as to their direction as it changes weekly!

They could handle his offensive ineptitude because the juggernaut Magic offense rolled up an impressive 84 points. No need to shake up a good thing, right? Also glad the the defensive prowess of O'Quinn was able to hold Anthony Davis to a measly 26 pt, 17 board night.

It's funny that so many people knock Andrew's defense, I read a really stat driven article that rates player's defense using a ton of metrics and last season Andrew was actually the Magic's best interior defender. At this point the only way he stays in the NBA long term (with a meaningful role) is with another team or with a new head coach. Vaughn is the Anthony Solomon of the NBA; guy has no clue what' hes doing and will be fired by the end of the year. That young team needs a real coach to develop them.

Why waste time trying to develop him if he doesn't look like a typical NBA player? He looked like a goon in college but was one of the most dominant players in the country.
