St Bonnies hoops has been on a nice run the last few years, they have made The tournament, won the A 10, have had a great run last year and they rarely sellout @home.......while the students for the most part fill the lower seats! local towns people do not come out in the droves that they used to.......it's kind of disturbing considering how low costing the seats are and how competitive the team has been as well as the girls team.

Very bad weather last year and for the Siena game this year has impacted attendance. North of Olean all major roads north/south were closed by the blizzard. Mother Nature plays a big role in our attendance game to game.

With a lack of entertainment in western NY this school should be selling out most games, I understand the weather, etc.......but this team has trouble attracting 5k fans in what has to be considered "good times" in bona history.

What lack of entertainment? Do you live in WNY? what do you consider entertainment?

For whatever reason, the reds are never full anymore. I was at the Dartmouth game where there was no weather issue or anything else standing in the way and they were at least 1/3 empty and that is being generous. Even the blue backs had many vacancies. Maybe its an economic issue? There doesnt seem to be a big reason why attendance is sparse.

I have attended Bona games for almost 50 years. Why not pack the house like the old days?
First, relatively speaking, I think Bona draws a bigger percentage of the population within a 1 hour drive than most schools in NCAA DI, but....
1. decline in population of NW PA. and SW NY.
2. No longer the only "game" in town....Univ of Pitt at Bfd draws some people. But, 50 years ago...no HS girls basketball, no HS Hockey, no HS volleyball to compete, and NO HBO, TMC etc..and ESPN....because the college game is on TV all the time, some people stay home to watch the big "boys" Duke, Kentucky...they don't know what they are missing at the Reilly!
3, Work schedules. It is fact more people are working crazy hours. This causes some members of my family to miss games.

I agree with declining population and I think a lot of people stayed away after the losing years...But, how many people stay home and watch it on the internet?

People stopped coming during the down years and the population is aging. The real issue is attracting the young kids. You need to have the local 20-somethings in the region attending the events for a night out. There is a lot of competition for their social and entertainment dollars. They can go to the RC or watch a game at home with friends while drinking a beer.
with the resurgence in SBU on the court, there will be a resurgence in the fans but it is a matter of recent SBU alums that stay in the area to attract their friends to the team and make them interested in attending. There are a lot of 20-somethings in the region that regularly make trips to buffalo, Rochester, Pittsburgh, and elsewhere for entertainment. They need to be introduced to the RC and see it as a viable entertainment option. They need to identify SBU as their team.
Identifying this demographic should be important. It would be better to give away tickets to this group to get them in to the venue and fill empty seats in the hope that they enjoy the atmosphere and will look to return.
But SBU games need to be more than basketball. There needs to be an atmosphere on campus where people are excited about the games--similar to tailgating. This is what I would imagine the new marketing position is working on. You want people to get to campus early, maybe grab a beer, mingle and get excited for the game. You don't have to sell beer at the games but you have to make it a night out. It can't be just a basketball game.

They've priced themselves out of their own market. Average Olean family probably can't afford to make it to more than one or two games a year. They need to have designated sections for families that are actually affordable.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Catt and Allegany county two of the poorest counties in NYS?

I agree with declining population and I think a lot of people stayed away after the losing years...But, how many people stay home and watch it on the internet? Agreed - and though we have had success recently it still does not compare to say Lanier days ranked in top 3 nationally or the NIT teams etccccc Even with the many new variables indicated here - I do think if we put an NCAA team back to back - the place would be packed. If Andrew's NCAA season was his junior year and he returned for an expected NCAA senior season - tickets would sell well and people would rather be in the house rather than watching on a PC. Its just a higher threshhold the team has to meet to earn the full house night after night.

Its also easy and cheaper to stay home and stream it. Also this phenomenon isn't unique to St. Bonaventure basketball - live attendance is down everywhere

I wonder if I did not grow up in the era of SBU basketball (final 4 era) that I was so fortunate to do...If I would be the die hard Bonnie fan I am today. Our twenty somethings probably cant fully understand!

I mean, there is just no reply for this type of comment but I'll try anyway....OHS is better entertainment than a good D1 hoops team? Really? Poor visibility? In the Reds? This has to be a joke. Have you been to an NBA game? And NFL game? There is basically not a bad seat in the house in the RC...Exorbitant cost of games? come on...It's what 15 dollars a ticket? I mean.....wow...this is why the reds must be empty. What a shame. www.thebonablog.com
