It is only three games in and they have a winning record. The sky isn't falling. I only look at a whole body of work; I am not reactionary. There have been plenty of coaches and programs that have hit some rough patches before everything clicked. I believe that you give a coach the ability to see the season through. We can talk at the end of the season when we see how it turns out. Until that time he has my full support to do it his way. I have no issue with that and hope you have a 20-9 record to push down my throat !! I wont apologize for expecting excellence from a 600k paid coach in a cash strapped university - nobody wants that excellence more than me !

Can you name any time in SBU history when your LOWEST paid coaches are responsible for recruiting? Or are we not allowed to ask for accountability there? I am not knowledgeable about the roles of the coaching staff members over the course of the program, but I would not be surprised to hear it has varied from staff to staff. I have my doubts that compensation level has a strong causality with regards to the ability to recruit, but I could understand it going the other way. Also, as the leader, if Schmidt judges that recruiting is not a strength of his, giving that role to others makes sense. I don't know what you mean by "accountability there." Accountability for what? Recruiting success? Wins? Attendance? Compensation? You have your doubts that compensation is tied to an ability to recruit? Really? Its fair to say accountability would be tied to wins and a judgement as to level of talent compared to opponent... what would you measure by? What is your expectation in wins each year? What would you consider unacceptable? Rather have you define it than me

How in the world did you pay $26 for red seats? I sat near the tunnel 9 rows from the court for $18 section 8 red lv on team side, are 26$ each from gobonnies.com The Red seats range from $12-22 depending where you sit. Interestingly, the seats I had in Section J, which are way closer, are only $18. I guess thats the difference between an actual seat and a bleacher. If you want to save money, get the $12 seats. I am not one of those people who say there is nothing to do in the area but if you want to watch basketball, it cant be beat. I get the privilege of watching a lot of Section 5 basketball and I see some really good games. I would rather pay 10-12 more and see D1 basketball than HS any day of the week. Maybe its just me...

JH - Please re-read my post: I said that I doubt compensation level CAUSES a coach to be a good recruiter. I believe your point of view right now with regards to Schmidt is in agreement with this statement. I also stated that a good recruiter may receive increased compensation due to his recruting skills. This can happen either in place or by moving to another institution. Lastly, I supported the idea that a program leader may delegate recruiting to others on the staff when he doesn't believe he is strong in that area. I wouldn't blame those individuals to then expect more in return for their important contributions.
I have no problem with using wins and perceived talent levels as a metric for accountability for a head coach. To me, using the concept of accountability implies there is a consequence of coming up short on those metrics. I'm not sure what consequences you have in mind after 3 games. Should Schmidt be fired now? Should he be given a pay cut?
I asked the question several months ago if anyone knows any facts about Schmidt's contractual compensation. I have seen several numbers purported here, but I don't know the composition of those numbers or if they are even correct. The last public document I saw from that was probably 3 years old didn't support the numbers I have seen more recently, but I know there has been an A10 championship and NCAA appearance since.
Again, for me, the question comes down to what does it take for Bona to play at near the top of the college basketball world and can it afford it? What are we willing to accept if it can't afford it? We have lost an AD, a Men's Assistant Coach and, now, a Men's Soccer Coach. What are we to make of this?

The perception that an A10 team should never lose to a MAAC team is just misguided. It happens not to just us. That would be like saying that a Big East team will never lose to an A-10 team. We consistently have more talent than MAAC teams, but there are players everywhere. Iona beating Wake Forest, Texas A&M whatever the heck they are beating St. Louis. It happens. Am I always happy with Coach Schmidt not always, but the constant carping on him gets a little old. Giving credit or blame for recruiting to just one person is misguided, much like the games they win and lose as a team!
The AD left for what he perceived as a better opportunity. He did a good job here and I wish him success as he moves on. It is better to have people who others may be interested in than to have someone who grows stale in his job (Larry Weise as AD anyone?). The mens asst moved on for what he perceived as a better opportunity. The soccer coach was awful so he left no great loss there.
Let's give thanks for what we have and continue to work to make it better.
JH have you heard any ticket sale estimates for Saturday? I am coming early as parking could be an issue if we have the 12,000 you are calling for. I hope they aren't charging $60 like they did for the NCAAS.

They should let olean students into the Reilly center for free.......a good way to expose young people a chance to be me a fan and possibly a student at st bona in the fixture.........and yes there is no entertainment in Olean NY...desolate area.......you would think an exciting college hoop team would be a great value to residents of Olean etc....

That's a recruiting violation, Birdman. You can do that with middle school kids or with post high schoolers but not with high school kids. (Mobile)
