Regarding Jay Adams, I am amazed that this talented kid was available as a Spring signing. I watched a youtube on him where his very successful high school coach describes his game and he is spot on. For the first time in quite a while Bonas has a PG for the next four years who has the ability to hit the 3 point shot. He doesn't turn the ball over and may be a work in progress as far as running the offense but how many freshman point guards in D1 are proficient in all areas. You are looking at the next star at Bonas and he fits the criteria of a lot of our past stars? Not highly recruited and flying a bit under the radar. The test will come when we step up to A10 play. I expect he will have some challenging games but overall hold his own. Good job staff!

I don't get how poorly Youssou is playing after all the offseason reports of him dominating at Mark Erb's Bigman Academy. Hopefully turns it on soon. He needs a guard who will get him the ball on the block. Big men cant create their own opportunities. We need Gathers back for this reason (among others)

I am not a fan of the big guy "anchoring" in the paint and apparently Schmidt is not either. All good DI teams have their big men "hedge" in order to disrupt the offensive and push the opponents guards laterally. I will agree that YN at times extends that concept out to far away from the top of the key and exposes the inside or picks up a stupid foul. But, a big guy as mobile as "YN" should not be "anchored". Offensively, he is trying to do too much when he is out of the block with the ball, and I agree the guards need to get him the ball a "drop step" away. The last foul on YN him was a joke, as the Jackson State player trip himself up. Two of his fouls were offensive fouls, another was on a blocked shot. But, I do not remember him picking up a reaching foul up top. However, my memory is short term.
Bigdobber: I love your comments on Jay Adams.

Regarding YN, it seems he is roaming and chasing instead of being anchored and positioned within the paint. Prior to the feed being disrupted, I watched him out nearly to the three point line on defense, and if he does that, we know he is prone to get a number of PF by reaching. My guess, and hope, is that after we get Denzel back, he will be roaming and chasing and disrupting at the top of the defense and the staff will keep Yousou closer to the hoop to maximize his shot-blocking and intimidation. On offense, Yousou is trying to do too much right now and is getting in his own way. We have seen this before with him. It seems to come and go, but maybe his summer working out with the big boys has him especially hyped-up. I expect by the time the A10 slate begins the staff will straighten him out (and he'll get his adrenalin under control) and he'll be looking better. As noted by several other posters it will also help when the guards start feeding him the ball in better position to score.

bart...I agree. He definitely looks out of synch. We need that game where everything clicks. I agree with other posters that these grind them out wins will serve us well. Jackson State was a well coached team and had some good players. I think they will be better in their league than the preseason projections.

Probably quite intentional by their offense to draw the shot blocker out of the paint

It will be essential for YN and Dees to both stay out of foul trouble. No offense to X but I'm not sure he will be ready to play against A10 bigs. He can prove him self in these upcoming games as we start playing the tougher part of our schedule.

The logic behind anchoring is two-fold. One it decreases the opportunities for PF from someone who reaches as often as he does. If he is within the paint that is fine, with most of the action in front of him so that he can re-act to that, as opposed to trying to block it from behind.
The second reason, is in a predominantly guard oriented league like the A-10, you are leaving yourself vulnerable to teams with quick guards to create a numbers mismatch with just Dion underneath as we saw last night. I'm sure Mark knows this, and is trying to get YN into a game rhythm and let the game come to him. It shows how vulnerable we are without Gregg to eliminate some of the pressure.
This begs another question. Once Gregg serves his 6 games suspension, what is the probability of him seeing appreciable game time. I honestly don't know and am asking!

Will Bonas be that drastically different when/if Gathers comes back? It'd be nice to take the onus off YN but that's my main question going forward....

Was reading a nice article about baseball player Curtis Granderson and his charitable giving.....and thought this was interesting.... "Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson, who spent one Tuesday afternoon in November at the New York Public Library, espousing education initiatives and supporting Citi's $138,000 donation to local charities. Three days later, Granderson was in Jackson, Miss., speaking at an English composition class that his sister teaches at Jackson State. Granderson discussed "Forty Million Dollar Slaves: The Rise, Fall and Redemption of the Black Athlete," a book that delves into the history of top black athletes around the world." m.mets.mlb.com/news/article/102192836/no-rest-for-charitable-curtis-granderson-in-offseason

Deon Wright has played every minute the last two games. Most likely candidate that Denzel could sub for, as he breaks in.
