On paper the Bonnies lead by a significant margin in every category except turn overs (Bona 13.5, NU 13.0). These #s can be meaningless once the ball is tossed up. For example, there is no doubt in my mind that NU’s very poor trey shooting (.239) will look very different against us. Defending the trey has been a real problem last season & over the past 4 games (teams hitting .377!)
Their best rebounder Snowden is their best trey shooter having hit 4-9 in 3 games. I’m hoping that Youssou will get rolling. We have not gotten him the ball in position to score. That is partly due to our guard play AND Youssou’s difficulty gaining position. He has taken only 10 shots ALL season (hit 50%) which is a meager 1 every 8 mins he is on the floor. That stat must improve in order to have a more balanced attack.
I expected that Alston would start at guard early in the season with Jay coming on to take it away. Well Jay has started every game & if the Canisius game is any indication his minutes will increase dramatically over Iakeem. Now Jay doesn’t have the luxury of breaking into Div I play gradually.
Jay’s 12.3 ppg on .519 FGs and .522 Treys is impressive. However to be the PG quarterback needed, his .58 A/TO ratio must be improved significantly. I am confident that as his comfort level with the speed of Div I increases his assist #s will get to where they are needed.
This is a game that we should perform very well. Hopefully the team doesn’t come in with that feeling. Any sense of over confidence could be disastrous. As Coach Schmidt has said “We are a work in progress.”
Idris has not shown much but has the confidence of Coach. He makes very few mistakes on the floor. Playing 8.3 mpg is more that Denzel played his frosh year. But of course Denzel has been unavailable. I expect a lot of mins for Denzel upon his return. No way of telling but IMO if he were playing 15 mpg+ we are undefeated & the Canisius & Jackson State games would not have had nervous moments.

Wgt - I think as You gets more into his game Jay's assists will jump up. Also, while we were expecting Jay to require a gradual intro to D1 ball, he certainly doesn't seem to have needed it. He has looked very comfortable, like he knows he belongs here, so it has not been required. How good/fortunate is that?.

Bona is favored by 12. Lets make sure we beat these Purple Eagles today.
I want to be 4-1 before we play Hurley's Buffalo Team as that will be a true test for this team.
Go Bonas!!!

I think we can all see without Denzel Gregg how vulnerable we are down low and as wgt states we have not defended the three ball in several years.
You can see why the two signings of Ladarian and Derrick were so important as well as proving to Kyle Alexander that this is the place to make his career bones. Adding him in the spring is the major piece to this recruitment class, and possibly impacts the following year also with Kaputo and Murray.

We need to move beyond where a loss at home to Siena and tighter games to Canisius & jax state are ok. The A10 is rising big time We are in a 6 bid conference they are from 1 We have been to the NCAA in last 3 years - they have zero Our Conference Championship is played on CBS national TV selection Sunday - they are ESPN2 on Tuesday night We play our conference tourney in Brooklyn Barclay - they play in Toledo OH or Springfield MA We have a player in the NBA - they dont We have the superior Conference TV contract Given all those advantages we should be recruiting players at a level that allows us to simply beat these teams by rolling the ball out and let our superior talent beat them. That has to be the level of expectation. It was mentioned at the Rochester coach luncheon by Schmidt that he and his staff has recruited 1 (maybe he said 3)player that was also recruited at the A10 level . This simply has to stop and should not be something that is bragged about - we need A10 level talent coming in always - and then coach and develop that! It can happen ! And yes our town and location and school and facilities can attract such talent - just ask Tim Winn, Marques Green, Mike Gansey, Patricio Prato, Harry Moore, David Vanterpool, JR Bremer how/why they came here Its about the jimmys n joes not the x's & o's

Any early word on ticket sales? I hope jh gets his 12,000 + , but I'm thinking less. I figure Canisius, Niagara and UB bring in 3,000 to 5,000 total and Bona brings in another 4,000 to 5,000. So I'm guessing 7,000 to 10,000, probably closer to the seven than the ten.
Hope I'm wrong...
(Embedded in those numbers is 1,000 or so general interest patrons without a particularly strong rooting interest.)

If we are going to start a pool on the attendance I'll put my guess as 8249, but I am not willing to wager anything of value and don't expect anything other than polite gibes if my SWAG wins. As to the above discussion on our conference, I don't want to look past Niagara, but UB will be a tough nut for the Bonnies this year, even at home. I assume there is no video available for this game, but reliable Gary Nease is available on WPIG.

That's one shot per turnover for Yousou so far this year. On a brighter note, he is averaging 10 boards a game, even with limited minutes.

On a per game basis Youssou ranks 13th in the nation in defensive rebounds, 24th in total rebounds, and 29th in blocks. Considering the number of Division I players, those stats put him in the top 1%. Not in this, however: assists/turnovers of 0.4 ranks 2449th. If the team plays to his strengths the Bonnies will win more games than currently assumed.
