this is the same guy who said we'd never get a so cal player to sign with an Olean, NY team. Lo and behold this roster had 3 of them and one just graduated early with a journalism degree. I'd say he's more the sit back and take pot shots type

Not speaking for him, but if I were in his shoes, I would likely leave too. If recovery has been slow his chances of getting to his peak are diminished. If he still would like to play, he can easily get a scholarship to a lower level D1 or a D2 program. He would be a huge pick up for a lot of teams. He likely has an area in the country he would like to live and maybe that is being back home near family. If he picks a masters program where he wants to launch his career he can work to build his networking into the area while he is completing his masters. All of this would help him transition to life after school and after basketball. This seems like the wise decision for a young man. Many times people don't plan for life after basketball and that is the real tragedy.

I asked Gather's if he'd like to say anything to Bonnies fans/Answer some questions about his departure. The Q and A is on hold until he feels up to it. This is what he told me. "I am not mentally prepared to make a statement right now. I need time to process everything that just happened." Hopefully I'll get some more info. out of him in the near future. www.thebonablog.com

I wish Jordan the best, it is great to see one our players graduated in 3.5 years, definitely helps the APR. I hope it was Jordan's decision and not something forced upon him. Actually, it doesn't. There is no benefit for graduating yearly. The points are awarded on a semester by semester basis and thus having dependable kids in the program for as long as possible is actually more beneficial to the program. (This is one of the reasons walk-ons will be given scholarships in their last season or two after they have proven themselves academically). While it doesn't hurt the team's APR, it provides another opportunity for a freshmen to come in and they are not exactly dependable. The turnover rate with freshmen and sophomores is fairly high. Thanks pinnum - always look forward to your input since you seem to have a good handle on how these things work - keep it up.

thesocalkid: Forgive and forget...I deleted my post. I also apologize for my contribution in getting this thread "off track".
I love Gathers. I believe he is an ultimate team player and we would be undefeated to this date with him in the lineup. Especially for two reason 1. leadership 2. his ability to get the ball inside. I believe YN's severe case of "fumbilitis" is a product of trying to do too much and poor entry passes. A big man does not catch with his feet and a big man is made smaller with passes to his chest. I started keeping track of how many entry passes were delivered properly to YN's target hand and how many were misplaced. But, as usual I get too caught up in the game to keep a record of such things. But, suffice to say our "entry" passing has not been good.
If Coach Schmidt told Gathers that he did not have plans for him this year after his slow recovery, I can understand. It's probably best for all that he seeks another opportunity. It would be great to see him play at SBU next year, but I believe we needed him more this season to help stabilize the young guards, than we will need him next season. History shows that Coach Schmidt does not discard players. Simmons came back and so did Michael Davenport.

tastylicks ---I have broken the Bandwagon policy on what should and should not be posted on this basketball forum. For that apologize... It was wrong of me and I let my emotions get the better of me. That post should be deleted. SORRY Tassty and old coach if either one of you are questioning what I do for our community then, PLEASE be at my house tomorrow morning at 8:00am and I will show you, I'll have the coffee waiting. Coach Fiske said, "I'm not going to go into details of what occurred about his departure..." What's the whole story here?

I don't like the sound of any this. I think the least Gathers deserved was to exhaust his ability to come back and try to play much like Marquise did last year and Davenport the year before. If he didn't want to, it should have been his call, the least he deserved.

I know this may sound crazy in this day and age, but could it just simply be that Jordan realized it was time to move on? I mean, graduation from college is supposed to be a life-changing event, right? Maybe he really was a STUDENT (first)-athelete and having graduated, felt it was time to get on with his life's work and if for whatever reason, Bonas/Olean did not offer exactly what he was looking for next, it was time to move somewhere that did, and hoops alone was not enough to keep him around - maybe he's got a girl back in LA - somebody start singing "California Girls" here please - Also, in looking at the play of the team this year, he has to realize that his return was not critical to the team - he was going to be a complementary player only - important yes, but probably not a starter and with limited PT. All in all, just the right time to move on. Maybe it's no more complicated then that.

If it was Jordan moving on there would be quotes from Jordan in press release.
Jordan gathers of first 3 years is a great 6th man on this roster.

This smells really bad!! This sounds like this may have come higher up than the Athletic Dept.! I can hear the conversation, 'Hey Jordan graduated and can't play this year. Our committment to him is complete, go tell Schmidt we can save $20K this semester, cut him loose!'
No way Schmidt doesn't bring back a captain and senior!
