Philosophy professor Rod Hughes passed away yesterday. He had a long battle with cancer. Friends will be received Monday from 4 to 7 pm at St. Bonaventure's chapel. A celebrated Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 am Tuesday at the chapel. Tomorrow the Olean Times Herald will have a complete obituary.

Sad news.
He was a colorful guy in the classroom. More memorable than most.

He was one of my top 3 professors, opening my mind in Intro to Philosophy (a course he rarely taught -- I've always felt fortunate to have had that class with him) and developing my critical thinking skills in Crit. Thinking. Yes, I had him twice and often thought of his influence when I was able to argue or put forward an unconventional point! Sorry to hear this news ... but appreciate being informed via this board.

I also had him for philosophy, and he taught me to challenge my own thinking on everything I held to be true - a real eye-ipener for a teenager.

Bummer. I remember Dr. Hughes well. One of my favorite all time profs. His critical thinking course really changed the way I thought about everything. RIP to a great man.

Thirty years after learning from Dr. Hughes, my daughter also had one of his classes. He'll surely be missed.
