Have always been interested to hear who people think are the best coaches in our league. If we had a draft tomorrow, and you had to pick a coach for your team from the 12 current A-10 coaches, what would your draft board look like? Here's mine:
1. Archie Miller - Dayton 2. Shaka Smart - VCU 3. Bob McKillop - Davidson 4. Chris Mooney - Richmond 5. Mark Schmidt - St. Bonaventure 6. Dan Hurley - Rhode Island 7. Phil Martelli - St. Joe's 8. Mike Lonergan - GW 9. Dr. John Giannini - LaSalle 10. Derek Kellogg - UMass 11. Jim Crews - Saint Louis 12. Jim Ferry - Duquesne
_____________________________
I love the job Miller did this season with an undermanned squad. That was solid coaching. He's not married to a system, he fits the system to his players. And he's a great recruiter. Smart is a better recruiter than game coach in my mind, and I've always admired the job McKillop has done at Davidson.
Schmidt gets the nod over Hurley in my opinion, but Hurley is building a beast at URI. I think Schmidt has done far more impressive works than the likes of Lonergan, Kellogg, Giannini and even Martelli recently.
Your thoughts?

Because it's, you know, an OPINION. I don't like Phil Martelli's style of coaching and I think 75 percent of the St. Joe's fanbase currently wants him out the door. Because I have him lower on my list than you doesn't mean my name is Mrs. Schmidt or that you're automatically right. What's your list?

Gotta have Bob McKillop at No. 1. It's amazing what they do every year, and they have a smaller budget than BONA! Dayton is looking good of late, and I love Shaka, but I think he's living off the Final Four run.
Is Shaka a great coach and of one of the best in the A10? Probably, but they haven't done anything good in the tourney since they joined the A10.
I'm on the fence about Martelli of late. He recruits very well, but he's had some tough years with the exception of last yr.
Any way: 1.) Bob Mc (2.) Archie (3.) Shaka (4.) Lonergan (5.) Hurley
Lonergan and Hurley might be stretches, but they've totally reformed their respected programs in a matter of a few years.
Schmidt is awesome, and anyone that knows Bona's A10 history knows he's one of the best in the A10 for what he gets out of his teams, but I don't think he cracks the top 4. To be honest he might be able to nudge out Hurley, but you can say that about most A10 coaches. With the exception of the top 3, no coach has really had sustained excellence for four plus years....Look at Martelli, Mooney, Giannini.

Martelli is obviously great....But since 08, very inconsistent. He did win the A10 Championship in 2014. Is winning the A10 tournamanet in 2012 followed by 13th, 9th & 7th more consistent?

My list order would be significantly different if you wanted a list of whom I thought were the best coaches in the A10 or if you wanted the best coach for St. Bonaventure from among A10 coaches. I'm not going to bother with either, though since most everyone's opinions have been expressed in one way or another over time.

Martelli has never been able to recruit consistently at St Joes and it is true that many of the alumni there want him out. I assume we are talking about just one season so I would take McKillop if I were picking 1st. Then Shaka and Archie are 2 and 2a. Cant go wrong with either one. Lonergan and Hurley are the next 2 and then I would have Schmidt with Mooney and Dr G. I would have it in tiers:
Tier 1 McKillop Shaka Archie
2 Lonergan Hurley
3 Schmidt Mooney G
4 The rest
I dont understand jh's dislike for Schmidt. Is he the greatest coach? No, if he was he would have been gone by now. Is he good for us? I think so. He doesnt have his eye on the next job and has done better recruiting recently. We have been competitive every season he has been here and he gets the connection between alums and the team.

To be straight - I dont have an absolute dislike for schmidt = it may seem so because I often remind the kool aid drinkers to some reality - especially we are a small school, he makes 600k, and last 3 years we have finished 13th, 9th & 7th. If providing balance to the koolaid drinkers means I hate schmidt - its wrong

Jh keeps harping on 13th, 9th, and 7th...I prefer to see it as A10 Champs, BAD YEAR, A10 semifinals, A10 quarterfinals...everybody is allowed one bad year...no?
