Excellent! Let's rebuild Forness Stadium. It could be used for both the new football and lacrosse teams.

I would love to rebuild Forness Stadium, but in order to do so we would have to demo Fort Duquesne, er...ah.. I mean Hopkins Hall. Portville CSD still uses part of the old stadium for its field seating. UB received the other portion and used it as a part of the old football stadium located at Bailey and Winspear, until that stadium was demoed in 1990.

The last year for varsity football was 1950 or 1951. Last year for club football was 1972. Who were the last varsity and club starting quarterbacks? Quick pull out your Book of Bona Football History by Professor Malcom V.T. Wallace.

While we struggle to raise funds to keep our basketball budget competitive in the A-10 and we try desperately to secure donations to improve the seats and put a new video board in the RC, let's start a football program and build a multi-million dollar football stadium. We can do it with the money we're not getting as we severely miss our enrollment targets on an annual basis.
Happy offseason, everyone. I've never had a chance to chime in on the football debate before, so that was fun! Go Bonnies.

I will probably increase my BAF donation this year--as is my usual practice--and will keep doing so as long as I don't feel money is being wasted on unproductive projects. Yes, I know this thread is all in jest but I'm just sayin'... As to the media equipment update--which is mentioned on another thread--I think it should happen but not with BAF money. I contribute way more to the Bona Fund than the BAF and I think that money should be used for such projects that enhance the academic experience of our students.

UB received the other portion and used it as a part of the old football stadium located at Bailey and Winspear, until that stadium was demoed in 1990. Alas, no longer true. Portville renovated certain aspects of its football facilities including the bleachers. The original intent was to refurbish the existing (i.e., Forness) bleacher supports but it turned out that it wasn't feasible. They ended up replacing them. I spent many a freezing afternoon sitting on those historic structures back in the day watching the Maroon and White...

Always fun to read the annual “Debate” on bringing back Football to Bona. That said, I believe we all have respect for the blink of an eye time it existed on the Guiness Book of Records “Longest lawn.” Johnny U played at Forness Stadium when Art Rooney had his summer camps there. In 55 he was drafted in the 9th round by Pittsburg & was the 4th QB behind Marchibroda before getting cut. Marchiabroda started 11 games that year for a dismal team. From The Catholic News Service……. Marchibroda continued playing football as quarterback in college. He attended St. Bonaventure University, a Franciscan university in upstate New York, from 1950 to 1951. He returned to St. Bonaventure to graduate in 1953 after attending the Jesuit-run University of Detroit for a year. During his year at the University of Detroit, Marchibroda led the nation in total offense. While at St. Bonaventure, Marchibroda led the team in 1951 to its best season in the history of the university’s football team. Marchibroda told Catholic News Service during a 1996 interview that attending St. Bonaventure “set me on the right road as far as life was concerned. It put me on the right path. I had the values in place when I got there, but they reinforced and perpetuated them. I can tell you, if you went sour in that environment, you’d go sour anywhere.” Father Whatley says he has heard Marchibroda, when paid a compliment, thank the Franciscans for straightening him out. In May 1996, Marchibroda received an honorary degree from St. Bonaventure during the university’s commencement ceremonies. Most know that the NFL HOFer JACK BUTLER was Marchibroda’s roommate & wide receiver at Bona. www.sbufootball.net/jack-butler---humility.html There is so much for new AD Tim Kenney to learn about Bona past & present. Then again I bet he already knows it as he embraces the "Good Journey." www.americancatholic.org/Messenger/Aug1997/feature1.asp

The correct answers - as memory serves me - are:
1951 - Ted Marchiboda - legendary head football coach for the Baltimore Colts, and OC for the Buffalo Bills during the Super Bowl years. Ted hailed from nearby Oil City, Pa.
1972 - Tim Bergan - legendary head football coach at Ellicottville CSD. I believe he still is the volunteer JV football coach in his retirement. By the way the Supt of Schools at Ellicottvile is another Bona grad, Mark Ward '75.
