Double shocking. Also gives a coachwho has never recruited a lick on the west coast a freebie. Very shady.

The school has to officially release a player for him to be eligible to transfer - and they still have to sit out a year. This goes back to the case where a player from St. Joe's transferred to UAB (I believe) and St. Joe's (i.e., Phil Martelli) would not grant him a release and the player was never eligible to play at UAB. In many cases like this, the school will release the player with certain guidelines - for UB, that could be not be able to follow Hurley, not being able to transfer to another WNY school, or not being able to transfer within the MAC. Wow - I never knew that. I always thought a player could transfer anywhere, but have to sit out one year. Thanks. A player can transfer anywhere, even without permission, and only sit out a year. However, if you don't get the release, then you can't receive a scholarship during the year you are sitting - which obviously makes it very difficult at a minimum. The situation at st joes was different. It involved a player who had graduated and wanted to go to grad school at UAB and play immediately. Since that would have been his second transfer, he couldn't do it without a release. Martelli gave him a release to talk to schools and gave UAB permission to talk to the player. But then after he transferred, he refused to sign the final paperwork. As a result, Martelli rightfully got raked over the coals by SI, ESPN, and others.

I don't know that it is fair to call the move shady. Could it be that the kid just wanted to play for Bobby Hurley?

There was an article I read on either the UB site or Buff News, where Evans referred to Hurley as the father figure he never had growing up. After reading that, to me it makes sense that Evans wants to follow Hurley, and probably for his own growth as a person, it is probably best that he transfers to the new school.

Just shady in the sense that if anyone thinks this wasnt being discussed as Hurley was being courted for the job, then your crazy. Just gives Booby a free recruit to start with. I'm sure they have a great relationship, etc. etc. but it seems a little off. I mean, has Shaka taken any current VCU guy to Texas with him? Not that I know of.
