The way I see it is if the AD can pull off upgrades with sponsorship money then the administration has its own work to do regarding enrollment. Let's not confuse the two simply because the new AD may have a ball of fire under him. Somebody wake up the innovation in Fort whatever it is called!

I don't want to complain because it is progress to get video boards I guess and I don't like when people complain about progress, but I will say one of the things I personally like about the RC is the lack of cheesy video boards. I like the experience & focus on the game myself but I understand others & possible recruits would like to see one so I will concede. Also if a business is sponsoring it than that is truly great for more reasons than just getting a new video board. I just hope they do it right and don't make it cheesy & forced. An example of what I am referring to is LaSalle University. Historic gym with an old school feel, horrible cheesy video board stuffed in the corner complete with lame graphics and distracting video pieces. It is forced and doesn't belong in that vibe. I know they will do better than that at the RC, no question in my mind, I just wanted to point out a "worst-case scenario." Just to clarify, Tom Gola was build in 1998. Nothing historic about it other than the name. They did everything wrong with that place, so no surprise they screwed up the video boards.

Last I heard an organization was underwriting the video board. Have not heard anything to change that. Don't know I would spend $$ for it but heh, if the price is right ...!

I am sure our low def broadcast will look amazing on brand new video boards.. This is critical to the whole thing. Without upgraded cameras, anything shown on a large video screen on the wall would look horrendous -- and embarrassing.

I guess that speaks to how terrible that place is

Aside from the already clarified points of history, I attended a number of games at the Gola Arena and saw absolutely nothing wrong with the video boards. During game action, they showed the same info that would be on the wall boards in the RC. During timeouts, there were some ads playing (much like the ads that are read at the RC), but also highlights coming out of the time out. There were in no way a distraction from anything taking place. If anything, they were a nice addition with the clarity provided in the stats.

I would imagine there would be a decent market for used equipment that is still better than what we have now. I imagine many local news stations have been on HD equipment for a few years now, and if they keep upgrading, where do the old ones go? What about all the equip from the sports channels? Isnt our current production vehicle a former ESPN one?? (may be wrong there...)

It's the former MNF truck, so not sure if it was during the ABC days or the ESPN days.

Wasn't necessarily just for one network, it was contracted by events like Super Bowls, GRAMMYs, Olympics, etc. But eventually some of these huge media companies will start switching to 4k, so you might be able to get some hand-me-downs that way. Retrofitting the truck for HD is an extensive project, but necessary if we want to continue to have a competitive JMC program and not waste new HD screens in the RC on a broadcast that streams in 360p on a good day.

Would retrofitting the truck for HD be a project that the JMC folks could undertake as part of the way to make the alum/student viewing experience better and also give the students for real hands-on knowledge of what it takes to produce images and sound for transmission? This would certainly be learning "outside the book" and could prove a plus on that first resume after graduation. Seems to me a perfect lab session although a long one.

I'm sure they could help, but I wouldn't want to have undergraduates installing a ton of equipment worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Sure, it would be great experience if a couple lent a hand, but I'd rather have technical professionals do the bulk of the work so everything's done right. Hell, I wouldn't trust myself installing that kind of stuff and I'm not even at Bona's anymore (2014 JMC grad).

Installing equipment shouldnt really even be a JMC role, that's more of an IT related thing, I would think. Yes the JMC people might like to understand what gets hooked up where, but I agree, leave hooking things up to those that know what they are doing. Just because something is hooked up and appears to work, doesn't mean its hooked up in the best possible way.. I had to rehook up my parents configuration when they had the DVR box, surround sound box, blue ray box, and game system all hooked into the one tv. More or less even though the TV worked, the main cable line wasnt hooked into the right spot, causing all the other lines to split the signal and the HD channels were sub par. Let the pro's do it

Many of those broadcast trucks are created by a company in Oneonta called Medical Coaches...they also create many of the portable MRI trucks used by hospitals. Much of the IT/electrical work for those is done by a company called Applied Solutions, that is actually owned by a Fillmore resident. Perhaps either of those companies could aid in upgrades?
