Great thinking!! Lose the only significant marketing outreach for the University and you might as well be looking at an enrollment drop of 1000 students, to say nothing of the collapse of all other sports currently fielded.As modest as the financial impact to the athletic program is as the only revenue based sport, like it or not, this program is your identity to the outside world.Yes the posters on this board are irrational at times, myself included, but we are also the true spirit and backbone of this university. And your point was.......
Think we have answered this question too many times in the past.

Do you enjoy the Mansfield game the Bonnies have been playing the last few years?
How do the fan bases of Siena or Albany compare to the College of Saint Rose in Albany? Would a matchup with Le Moyne make you interested in traveling to Syracuse for a game? Would Mercyhurst and Gannon fill the Little Three void of Niagara and Canisius?
Personally, I am not much of a fan of the D-2 model. D3 schools are academically focused and D1 schools are focused on competing at the highest level and D2 doesn't really do either.

I think the next move after going to D2, would probably be shutting the doors to the university, and that is the least attractive thing I can fathom.

I've heard of Bonas' called St. Basketball University. Admittedly, this phrase refers to the great era of the Stith Brothers and Bob Lanier. Now Bonas' occasionally pulls a big upset to give bubble teams a "bad loss". To go to Division II would be a big mistake. To leave the Atlantic 10 would be a mistake. A few years ago many wished Bonas' could join the new Big East. I think Bonas' is placed just where they can create havoc and worry opponents. No Division II.

Bona can probably hold on in the a10 but it is still back in the sticks.. Academically there is nothing cutting edge. Demographics are challenging d1,d2,d3. Not a factor to more than half of prospective students

From what I am told, the powers to be have looked into going to D II.

"yeah I went to that college a few miles up that exit" That would be about the extent of my future relationship.. As opposed to taking my kids to the games, donating to the school, investing myself into its future, trying to convince my kids to carry on the tradition and go there.. etc |

I think the next move after going to D2, would probably be shutting the doors to the university, and that is the least attractive thing I can fathom. i'll listen to anything that will keep the doors to the university open...i'll be the first to admit that i didn't exactly set the world on fire as a student at bonas, but how does going from division 1 to division 2 reverse the decline in student enrollment and insure that bonas will be here for years to come?...i don't get it, but like i said, i'm willing to listen... |

IUP (Indiana, PA) would be the best case scenario. They played in the D2 NCAA national championship game this year and got exhibition games at Pitt and South Florida.
IUP Spends $1.2MM on basketball with and averaged 1,330 fans per home game for the great season. The school has an enrollment of nearly 15,000 students.
Though some more likely comps are Mercyhurst, Le Moyne, and Saint Rose.
Mercyhurst spent $1.4MM went 20-9 on the season (beating IUP twice) and averaged 443 fans per game.
The College of Saint Rose spent $1.38MM on basketball, went 9-19 on the season, and averaged 424 fans per game.
Le Moyne spent $1.09 on basketball and averaged 339 fans per game.
SBU spends $3.8MM on basketball and averaged 3,879 fans per home game.
Long story short: The Bonnies men will likely end up playing for less fans than the women currently do, if they go D2.
There will be no national TV contract offering marking and branding for the school, there will be no community members buying tickets to games and very little sponsorship dollars coming in.
In my opinion, the talk of going D2 is even crazier since D3 would provide as much of a benefit and cost a lot less.
However, any talk of going D2 is healthy. When you have some faculty members getting upset about athletic spending and being vocal about it (on campus, and in the media) it can be valuable for a school to be open about the options and weigh the benefits and liabilities of such options. When people do not see value in something and are not a part of that community they can be ignorant to all that it offers. (Kind of like the field of dreams scene when the brother starts to see and tells Ray not to sell the farm.) There is no doubt that if they were to have a study conducted the recommendation would be to remain D1.

The first inkling I got that this idea was even being discussed was in one of those online, interactive "State of the University" (or whatever it's called) events hosted by Sister Margaret a year or two ago. I don't remember how the question was posed but it was something like "In what area do you most want to see your donations invested?"
Having spent much time in academia--and not as an athlete--I am very concerned with academics and donate far more to the Bona Fund than the BAF. However, I selected the "Division I Athletics" response because I think Bona loses its brand and probably its future without it. In fact, I would probably cut my losses and cease donating right then if it were to happen. There may be many others like me, some of them rather large donors.
P.S. Athletics came in fairly high in the responses, so I think it effectively sent the message not to make any changes.
