The communication and roll out of this wasn't good, but I think Kenney is doing his best to explain why the change was made without explaining why it was made. The A-10 clearly made it a "point of emphasis" rather than a mandate so they wouldn't be blamed when there was backlash on campus like we're having. Kenney is trying to say that without pissing off the conference.
Its probably a wise move for the new guy from the small school to not piss off the conference.

People need to face the fact that something was going to change whether we liked it or not. To me, this is not that serious of a change as long as the people who buy they seats in front of the students know what they are getting into, and it sounds like they do (according to the articke B02 posted.)It doesnt remove the home court advantage and it appeases the whiners from UMass and other schools. St Joes better be making some changes too though. if st. joes doesn't make any changes then this looks even worse I hope I'm wrong but theres no way in hell I see a nice cohesion of the students and the courtsiders. I thought that was the worst part of Kenney's Q & A, when concerns were addressed about that it was almost like he was surprised at that question or that it hadn't crossed his mind. Maybe not but thats how it seemed. It sounds like they did their due diligence: “There are those who say, ‘Who’s going to pay money to sit in front of the students?’ But there are younger people who want to do it … who think it will be fun.”

On that note of change lets play all men's games in the Richter Center. So much cheaper one less basketball court to maintain, less employees to hire. We need change so let's do it. Let's remain calm and see if it works out. ...., What are the better alternatives? - padded rail - reinforced RC personnel in last minutes of the game creating human barrier - advertisement boards - put bleachers behind visitor section and put students back there. ( I agree this may be questionably better) but how great to give a-10 something else to cry about. - the best one and what everyone would be happy with...Keep the proposed seats and give the ones in front of student section to the students and only the students

3 thoughts came to mind:
1) I wonder if Chuck has his wish of better access to SBU athletics now? 2) Unfortunately, whether it is the case or not, the explanations come off as damage control due to the sequence of events. I personally believe this was all done in response to a mandate from the league, but a mandate that no one wanted to explicitly site for all the usual protocol, PR and maybe legal reasons 3) I'm glad I was away on vacation when this all blew up. I can now look back over everything after the fact and consider it all rationally. Doing so, I have no real problems with what is happening. Bona IS a special place (I have some stories from my vacation), but if we continue to be a stagnant, in-bred and isolated institution, we will continue to wither. We need to find the path that includes changes and also preserves the "specialness."

No doubt cookie-gate helped that decision along.

Has anyone thought the obvious.....like communicating to the students that several particular aspects of their court-side behavior have grown to be viewed as potential security/safety threats and to tone it down/knock it off or student court-side seating sanctions will have to be put in place. How about giving this a try, with reinforced RC personnel for a few games, to see if simply communicating the problem to the students might fix the situation.

Good luck trying to curtail a bunch of 18-21 yr old drunk kids. What should they do, turn off the lights when they get of hand? Seriously though, you cant control a mob so the easiest thing to do is try to contain them. Also, this came from the A10 and as TK indicated, its a matter of liability.

My options are all still going to allow first row access, no row of fans to be in the way. The exception being students back behind visitor bench which I think would be awesome but conceded it would be controversial. If we are forced to accept the whole a-10 pressure bit (which I think we should question in and of itself) the options I listed I think would be better than a row of Seats. People think athletic department is going to let students breath down back of these seat holders? No way. It will be seats followed by a two foot walkway behind them, looking at a four foot difference. At least my options allow students to press against barriers and lean over like the ferocious Wolfpack they are. I would like to edit my last suggestion, - forget giving them away, but reserve the 10-14 seats in front of the student section for students. Charge $10/ticket/game. Have a lottery if necessary (based on combo GPA/games attended) let students purchase these tickets. This way you can revoke them from individuals the second there is an issue. - athletic department appeases A-10 -students get front row back - we raise small amount of money - athletic department has complete control of who sits in those seats. All I am asking is a little more thought on the subject, people are not against change they are against the athletic departments version of it. I think my last idea would really make everyone happy.

That would actually be worse than the way this whole thing was rolled out (which was poor). As a new AD there is no way you can justify telling the students: "Hey everyone, ummm, we're gonna need you not to be as crazy." I give Kenney credit in at least saying that he didn't want to curtail the student experience and impact on the game. Yes, he's moving them back and adding a layer of fans between them and the action, but the last thing he wants to do is have them be less rowdy. That being said, Kenney is going to have to show some serious backbone when the people in front of the students start complaining. Because we all know that's going to happen. And at that point Kenney will look terrible if he goes to the students and says "cool it." Anyone who purchases those seats should be ready for the unpredictable, weird, vulgar, etc. And if they complain about it, Kenney should tell them to move, instead of turn it back on the students.

Like the AD is really going to tell $500 BAF donors to "stuff it" when they complain about the lack of comfort in the seats he dreamed up for them.

Vinny, Give me a break, I am saying we should question the a-10 pressure as a reason to put in seats, not the existence of pressure. That said why has no one asked A-10 for comment? (looking at you OTH, Bonablog, BN, BV) at least let them take some of the flack off athletic department. Anyways sure go ahead Vinny have that point to huff and puff about. No comment on my last suggestion? In the meantime it looks like we can still donate to a cause we can all stand behind instead of talking about it: www.gofundme.com/zsh3kd8
