I have seen the Bonnies practice twice now. The first 45 minutes of practice coach stresses defensive positioning. Speed is emphasized all during practice. Work as a unit. Over and over. Dion, Jay, and Marques will start. Taqqee and Stockard will probably share the three. Kaputo will see time. He's quick , fast, can shoot, and get you the ball. Denzell will play. Griffin will get minutes. Still the question is who will man the 5 spot? I believe coachs' Ace in the Hole is Derek Woods. I've seen him twice. He doesn't look like a frosh. He's big. Last week he spent a good amount of time going against Chris Dees. When Woods gets the ball low, his shots tend to go in the basket. He has a presence. It's still early, and much to be learned. Can he learn the offense? Will he learn coachs' defensive positioning principles? Many questions yes. Sooner or later Woods will be key. I'm hoping sooner.

Woods looked very good. Much stronger than Griffin. He is listed as 6"8" and he appears to be a legit 6"8", as programs are often somewhat exaggerated .
Tyson looks much stronger physically!

I have not seen Woods play. Glad to hear some of the optimism about how he looks. In spite of the team lacking size this year I am not anticipating Woods to be an impact player. Hope he gets some mins to develop & be a future force.
I watched his quarter final PA game where he lost to Roman Catholic (a real solid team) 58-57. I think Derrick tallied 16 points on 5-12 shooting & 5-9 from the line. In spite of 5-9 he showed a nice stroke from the line and was 1-1 treys.
Was surprised that he has an effective RIGHT handed jump hook. With his size and quickness, being able to make that shot with both hands is a great inside weapon.
He looked like he needed weight & muscle in that game but he was guarding Manny Taylor, 6’6”/270. A beast inside who will be playing football at Rutgers. I hear Derrick is bigger since that game 6 months ago.

JP Butler's talks about open practice in his article "Defense major theme in first Bona practice of the season." Following are a couple interesting comments from article. Without shot-blocking center Youssou Ndoye in the middle for the Bonnies this season, and with an otherwise pronounced lack of size on this particular roster, defense has become an even bigger priority for Schmidt’s team entering 2015-16. Schmidt reminded them: “We want to score the ball as fast as humanly possible.” That sentiment has never really been the case at Bona under Schmidt, not with both Andrew Nicholson and Ndoye in the post, but it will seemingly be the mantra this year given the Bonnies’ guard-oriented roster that has only one player — 6-foot-8 freshman Derrick Woods — taller than 6-foot-7. www.oleantimesherald.com/sports/article_377dcdc6-6a38-11e5-b503-0bc66379269b.html

I share Hermit's excitement over Derrick Woods. I've seen a few scrimmages and believe Derrick is clearly the most physical post player the Bonnies have this season. Derrick is an athletic big, who showed his athleticism on an alley oop pass from Jay. There was a time when it looked like he was playing against JV kids and must have grabbed 4 or 5 straight rebounds and putting a shot back up after each one. Derrick was jumping over Chris Dees and Dion for these rebounds.
With Tyson injured I think Derrick is the only choice if Schmidt wants a physical big as a starting center. As mentioned by others I can easily see Schmidt going with a small lineup with Dion and Denzel in the post. I see Derrick playing significant minutes for the Bonnies.

I found it interesting that Schmidt's "first five" included Woods and Taqqee with Jay, Marcus, and Dion.
I will add that I was extremely impressed with how quickly Woods absorbed instruction and was able to process it. We all remember how Dion didn't see the court as a freshman because he wasn't able to do that. Look for Derrick to get a lot of minutes.
