thanks for posting the news about the desoto, derhut...the first thing i thought of when i read the article was: what would be best for bonas/the area?...i'm drawing a blank...but there are people on this board who've lived in the area all their lives and others who have had careers that would make them qualified to speculate...i'm wondering what your opinion is on how this property could/should be developed...

Well.......the situation isn't any different than the vacant Castle property that SBU tried to develop for years without success. I'd say a big-box store like Costco would be OK but I'm not sure that The Olean area could economically support something like that. The site will probably end up as a tacky strip mall replete with a Family Dollar, Dominos Pizza, etc..

I live about .33 miles from the site so I was hoping for a bar.

The site will probably end up as a tacky strip mall replete with a Family Dollar, Dominos Pizza, etc.. Olean already has a BJ's Wholesale Club; Costco targets areas with six figure incomes so they won't move in. An empty lot is better than the Desoto. Can't see another big box store moving in. Hotels on the Allegany end seem to be saturated now. If there is another Castle development that brings real employment, from outside the area that otherwise wouldn't be there, it would be good. Though I am not sure there will be much demand for a business park to be developed. Strip mall, sadly, is most likely...

I live about .33 miles from the site so I was hoping for a bar. maybe that would work...like a sports bar, with multiple tvs, that celebrates the character of the area... each one broadcassting a different game...i, too, don't like the thought of another strip mall...it's gotta be something that the area doesn't have or has very few choices...something different from a strip mall which, by its nature, is basically devoid of character...

I hope someone builds a restaurant and names it Der Hut and it has real German food, I mean Sauerkraut that's actually sweet, Schweineschnitzel, Spaetzle, Lederknoedeln, and a real piece de resistance (sorry about the French here, I mean Stammplatte) like a Holsteinerplatte or house specialty Oleanerplatte. Top it off with a variety of good dark German beer or Scwarzwalderkirschentorte for those with a sweet tooth. I could go on, but I think I'd make the trip to Olean if it were for that alone.

Sadly, I don't think there is a place like that anymore in WNY. There was a place outside of Franklinville, but they closed some years ago. I don't even know of a place in Buffalo.

I like Sipo's and 70's idea. Der Hut reprised. I would come back for a draft but no bartending for me.

Der Hut #2 would be interesting as long as they offered 4 OV splits on Wednesday nights ! What type of restaurant/bar could the Olean - Allegany support ?Seems like some of the better local establishments have difficulties thriving. Is Applebees or something similar like Fridays the top end for the area ?

It is a Paladino property. I suspect it will sit empty for at least several years and end up a Rite Aid.
