Maybe he didn't think he'd get enough time with Osun here? Otherwise, I can't see why you would choose a team in that conference who just made the NCAAs for the first time ever.

You never know what goes on in the mind of a 19 yr old kid making a college decision. But,from a purely basketball perspective it is incredibly hard to fathom that he chose a school like Gardner Webb, located in Boiling Springs, NC (population 4,687). A school with zero basketball tradition that in 13 home games last year averaged 1,310 fans per game (including family and friends) and had games in front of 690, 875 and 985 fans respectively. And the team was good last year. Imagine playing a Div 1 basketball home game in front of 690 fans?
Hard to believe.

Good points BUB, also KAREEM has friends at BONA, G W, & U CONN, however, non of us know the relationships he has and who he is closest to.

So, where does the staff go from here? Point Guard? Is AMADOU TRAORE still in play? Someone else? Or the always popular, leave the ship open?

I’m bummed about not getting Reid but would it have been kind of redundant to have Winston, Bobby P and Reid? It seems they would all play the same position. It was probably difficult to sell the kid on that.

He would have been a real nice addition. One reason for his decision may have been the competition to get mins with Osun, Justin, Bob the Builder and Bobby.
It appeared that VCU and Uconn had bowed out on him. I believe our staff had more confidence in his game than he did. Lower level may be a good match.
Wish him the best at a program where he should have an immediate impact.

Wow. Completely shocked. Being a fan of the small team that occasionally beats out on recruits from bigger teams, I wish Gardner-Webb and Reid good luck! Disappointed for sure, but we lost the guy to Gardner Webb, not UConn, so I’m okay with that. I don’t buy the competition angle, kids don’t usually care about competition, and his skill set is a bit different than the others with his rebounding and arm length. Probably just did not like the enchanted mountains or wanted a slightly more temperate climate. Either way, we are still stocking the shelves with talent. Moving on to AJ.

It was probably difficult to sell the kid on that. Well...yes and no. Seems like Reid and Bobby P are very different types of players. Bobby gives us the stretch 4 man, Reid would stayed inside, etc. Are we sure Winston is a 4 though? I mean maybe Carpenter is also competition too? In any case, Reid sounded like another high motor guy that Schmidt could develop. Would have been a nice addition, imo.

Schmidt's track record seems to be that guys that come in as 2/3 men end up as 3s (Welch, Idris) and big wings end up as 4s (Wright, Gregg, LD). That said, I think we still need a back up PG. I know some have suggested it would be Johnson but I'd feel better with a pass first PG. we also need a big that can play 4 or 5 and develop into a steady 5. The PG needs to be able to step in immediately in case Lofton were to get hurt. Maybe a juco or grad transfer. The big could be a guy that needs to develop for a year or two.

Diappointed? You bet, Kareem seemed like such a great fit. I thought I did all the right stuff, I wore my Bona t shirts as undershirts the last three days, I carred my lucky penny that I have had since the Bonnies run with Adams, Poser and co, lots of prayers, but maybe the fact I'm not Catholic? But, first of all I'd like to thank the coaches and players, that put in a lot of time with Kareem and a host of other recruits that we've been close on, they are likely disappointed as well. It will take sometime to stop thinking of "what could have been", that being said Schmidt and his staff are going to do everything they can to find some more parts to what is already a really good class. We'll simply try again, the good news is that we've got some time. There are kids coming to Canada and the states all the time, it's worked in the past, it will work again. Hey, I thought I was done going to the Bandwagon at least once a day, I thought we'd filled out dance card. So I am still going to the board with the excitement of a child to dream about what wgt, sipo, chuck and others not mentioned have managed to unearth about our next move. Oh, I left out unfurled, whoever you are you are also a great source. Forever thankful to be a Bonnie.
