Throughout the season HOLMES II is the most standout player contributing to his team's success.
DAYTON 17-3 & 7-1 conf relies heavily on his scoring and rebounding. He is their top scorer 22 ppg in conference & rebounder grabbing 8.8 boards SANTOS is their #2 scorer at 11 ppg and #2 rebounder at 6.3. He does not foul out (has only 13 PFs in 8 games)
The FLYERS boast the best Defense allowing 64 ppg in their 8 conference games. I watched them hold high scoring GW (80ppg) to just 61 pts two nights ago. Shot 32% FGs and 17% TREYs to hold them 19 pts below their average.
We have quite a challenge in front of their 13K + fans. We succeeded in quite a challenge coming from 20 down to win by 5 over VCU. This should be our toughest challenge till Bklyn.
GO BONNIES!

Its going to take a big effort. Holmes will get his but we are going to need to limit open looks for the other guys, Brea especially.
On offense move the ball and move without the ball

Containing BREA could be the key.

Richmond held Holmes to 9 pts and 8 boards. He also got into foul trouble and was limited to 26 minutes. He normally plays around 31 minutes.
Dayton is talented and deep. It’s not about one or two players. They have 5 players averaging 9 ppg or more and most are very athletic. They shoot 40% from deep.
It is a big ask on the road for the Bonnies to hang with UD. Their building is always sold out and very loud. I believe we’ve only won one time at UD arena. SBU is 3-18 vs UD overall.
Hope I am wrong … but it could be a long night. Never know what to expect from this group.

Most surprising feature of Dayton’s offense is they are mainly a 3 point shooting team. — 7th in the nation shooting an incredible 40% from threes. — 22nd in made 3s at 9.8 per game. — Despite having a solid 53.1% from 2s, Dayton is near the bottom in 2 point FG attempts (358th) having just 4 teams in the nation attempting fewer shots inside the arc. — Last in A-10 in attempted and made field goals, but are 1st in field goal percentage. Another surprising aspect is Dayton basically has just a 6 man rotation. 6’11’’ Isaac Jack is 7th in minutes played and is averaging less than 10 minutes a game. In comparison Kyrell is 9th in minutes played for the Bonnies with 12.2 per game. Two big factors in Dayton’s loss to Richmond. — Dayton shooting 33.9% from the field is by far their worse shooting percentage this season. — Except for blowouts, Darron Holmes playing 25 minutes is by far his lowest this season. His limited minutes was due to foul trouble. Finished game with 4 fouls. Scoring 9 points is just 1 of 3 times Darron has scored less than 10 points this season. Darron Holmes impressive rank in A-10. Talk about a complete game. — First in scoring 19.4 ppg. — 3rd in field goal percentage (among players who made 100+ FGs). — 3rd in rebounding at 7.9 rpg. — 4th with 44 blocks. — 24th in 3 point percentage at 39.6%. — 24th in assists with 52. Rank 26th averaging 2.6 assists per game. Dayton’s top 6 players. — 6’10” Darron Holmes averaging 19.4 ppg. He is the only player in D-I who has more than 40 blocks, 40 dunks and 40 assists. Holmes has 44, 45 and 52 respectively. — 6’7” Nick Santos averages 11.6 ppg. Dayton’s 2nd best 3 point shooter 44.3% and 3rd FG% at 47.9%. — 6’6” Koby Brea averages 11.0 ppg. Brea leads the nation in 3-pt. FG% (min. 2.5/game.). Brea is shooting .487 (58-119). — 6’2” Kobe Elvis averages 9.5 ppg. 3 year starter with Dayton. Like Daryl Elvis has struggled with his shot this season. Shooting 35.9% from the field is the worse of his career. Actually shooting slightly better at 3 making 36.4%. — 5’11” Javon Bennett averages 9.0 ppg. His shooting from the field (37.5%) is slightly better than Elvis but really struggles from 3s at 30.4%. Has impressive assist/turnover ratio 3:1. — 6’3” Enoch Cheeks averages 6.1 ppg. Started all 20 games and playing 29.5 minutes per game. Like PG Bennett, Cheeks is a much better shooter from 2s than 3s. He is Dayton’s 3 leading rebounder. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/dayton/men/2024.htmlatlantic10.com/stats.aspx?path=mbball&year=2023daytonflyers.com/news/2024/2/1/mens-basketball-mens-basketball-hosts-st-bonaventure-friday-night.aspx

I watched them a couple times, they use Holmes in a unique way this year. He brings the ball up court. It looks a little funky with the 6'10 guy dribbing up court real low to the ground but it has been effective.
I hope Schmidt sticks with the plan of a "soft-press" ie get a guy to put a little pressure on Holmes when he does that. If nothing else, to wear him out a little. I think there is opportunity to draw an offensive foul as well.

Key to winning is simple on paper shoot over 50 percent and play great D, up to Schmidt and the boys to do that.

Venning really held his own against Holmes last year we when we beat Dayton at our place. Each playing 36mins (a ton for Venning) and Holmes only outscoring Venning 21-17. We also held Brea in check as he only scored 9. I think those are the two keys. Don’t let Brea kill us and hope Venning can keep pace with Holmes. We also have better guard play and lot more scoring options than last year. It’s going to be tough but we’ve got a shot in this one if we play our best ball

I'm concerned about Venning extending out on D to cover Holmes - who has extended his range and blow by ability.
Wouldn't mind seeing Bonnies go small with Evans checking Holmes to extend and keep him in front.

Last year we held the Flyers to 59 points on 39% shooting. UD was 4 for 20 from deep but that was at our place. We had all five starters in double figures and made 9 threes. Only got 2 pts from the bench.
I feel we will need to score 70 pts to win at Dayton and get at least 15 to 18 pts off the bench. We have so many unknowns and questions each game.
Can we make shots at UD arena when we have not done so historically?
We were awful from deep last game until late … so does that mean we will make 8 or more threes tonight?
Can the Venning-Brown combo out-score Holmes?
Can Chuck bust out and bury a few deep threes?
Go Bonnies!
