I place all of the blame for the pessimism with respect to the players on Schmidt. If he was not doing such a good job coaching these guys (and I mean that wholeheartedly), then we would be spending a lot more time arguing about his coaching philosophies and game management (a la the Solomon years). We were so accustomed to seeing bad offensive sets and poor defensive schemes that we never had a lot of time to focus on the individual players.

I'm not saying I don't have patience, and I love the direction I see Schmidt taking us already. But does that not mean we should not want to win? I highly doubt Coach Schmidt sits in his office after a tough loss and says, "wow, we could have had that one, but it's a good thing I've got the team going in the right direction with some good recruits coming in." He wants to win, the players want to win and the fans should want to win. It is a breath of fresh air without a doubt to be playing in these close games. I'm willing to bet out of the four close losses we've had, at least three of those would have been blowouts in the past. But I still want to win, sorry, those must not be "realistic expectations." There is not a single poster on this Board that does not desperately want this program to win! Not one! All these references by some posters stating that they want to win more than others and that some on this Board want to settle for losing or mediocrity, has created a paper tiger. WE ALL want to win! That said, the "realistic expectations" part is that many of us realize that no team goes from multiple seasons of having low single digit number of wins to completely turning things around in one season. Especially when that team that only has 7 or 8 players available, only 5 or 6 of which have Division 1 experience (and only 3 or 4 of which are not injured in some way). In the next year or so we should be winning the games that are the source of our current frustration. But before we start winning these games routinely, we need to first become competitive. It looks like we made the jump to being competitive this year. With lots of new quality players on the way, some with decent experience, things should change for the better. One further point; if the fact that an undermanned Bonas basketball team loses a game to a team with deeper and better talent angers people "for days", perhaps one should think of filling their lives with some things that really matter. I'll admit that it upsets me for a few minutes when Bonas loses, but then I quickly move on. On the other hand, if a person has the luxury of caring that much about Bonas winning, perhaps he should consider himself lucky that there is not a more urgent issue impacting his life. Cheers!

Well said sneakers. Noone was calling for Sol's head as loudly or as early as I was. It wasnt that we were losing games...but the WAY we were losing them, with no hope in sight and not a hint of improvement.
This squad hustles (until its out of gas). We've seen more set plays and defensive stops out of time outs in a third of a season than in the past three years.
You go from no chance, to competitive to learning how to win, to being great. Sadly, we dont get to skip steps. Enjoy the turnaround, but damn people get some perspective.
