A few other options for you in and near Olean:
1. Restaurants: A. Sprague's Restaurant in Portville - only about 8 miles from Olean. Great food - turkey dinner is out of this world and lots of maple foods and products. B. Attard's Restaurant - Greek, Italian, Lebanese and other foods C. Angee's Restaurant - Italian food; a Bona b-ball historical spot
2. Not too many museums in the area, but try these: a. Pioneer Oil Museum in Bolivar (17 miles from Olean); documents history of oil industry in this area starting with oil boom in 1881 and continuing to the present b. Cuba Cheese museum (15 miles) teaches about history of cheese production in area from 1800's to present; make sure you stop at Cuba Cheese Shoppe to buy some of their hundreds of choices c. Penn Brad Oil Museum in Bradford (18 miles or so) - also has history of oil in this area, but from the Pennsylvania perspective starting in 1870's d. Zippo Lighter Musuem in Bradford e. Snipe - I am glad you are thinking about vacationing here in Cattaraugus County. I won't disagree with the other posters' comments but you can honestly spend an entire week in Catt. Co - home of SBU, the Seneca Nation, Amish, the Allegany River, the Old Library, Beef and Barrel, etc. The Allegany River Trail is spectacular. Provided is a link to the Cattaraugus County tourism information: www.cattco.org. Scroll down the left side of the website and look for tourism. It will provide you with many tourism links within the county. This are has so much to offer. Allegany State Park has the cabins you are interested in. Having worked there in the past you might want to make a reservation soon. They have a tendency to get booked for the summer months. When I worked at the park they used to have a lottery for the most popular trials and cabins. However, in grand scheme of things this is a very cost efficient vacation. Some posters have recommended Ellicottville. I agree. It is quant and lively, especially in the winter months. If you are coming up for the game Wednesday try to make time for Ellicottville. Depending on your vacation needs their are musuems to visit - SBU, the Seneca Nation and the Railroad Musuems. Great restaurants in Olean - Attards, Angie's, Beef and Barrel, Old Library, the Bistro (new and trendy) and the Century Manor. Zoar Valley is about 30 minutes away from Allegany State Park. Hiking trails and rapids. Should you stay at Allegany State Park you are within 2 - 2 1/2 hours of other major destinations - Niagara Falls, Letchworth State Park, Buffalo. I hope this helps.

Snipe, sorry I forgot to include this very important musuem. The World War II museum in Eldred, PA. It is about 30 - 40 minutes away. It is a wonderful museum. Honestly, I wish the museum would locate to Olean. What a wonderful museum to honor the greatest generation!
Not that this will do you any good this summer (at least I don't think it will) but the area has been granted a Challenger Space Station program. It will be located on the campus of SBU when all the funding comes in. Obviously, this project centers on space, engineering, etc. When this gets up and running it will be a wonderful asset to our community.

For you guys that aren't familiar with the A-10 board, Snipe is legendary for his quick wit and everything Xavier. Even in our darkest days, he's always shown support for our program. Wear something Snipe (Dayton shirt?), that will make you stand out so you can meet some members of the bandwagon. Have a great time at the game.........

Rarely mentioned on this board in spite of its great food, spectacular views of the Enchanted Mountains & owned by a Bona grad. Check out their web site. Fabolous place. hostageh.com/Next favorite restaurant is the The Old Library Allegany State park seems like what you are looking for. Nice to see out of towners interested in the olean area...I would add to the posting on Sprague's that it is not only excellent food ,but reasonable prices, the Rest. also has a variety of child friendly features and decor items that enhance the experience for kids..not the least of them is a chance to see the syrup processing and packaging area. First class. Also concur that the Ho sta geh is a fine rest. Excellent food ,great views...best when roads and weather are good.Summer sunsets from their deck are not to be missed.

Snipe, be sure to take the family to Rock City Park. It's just a few miles south of Olean on Rt 16. and is really amazing. Rocks that are larger than a house piled up on the top of a hill. Trials wind through them and over them in a beautiful wooded area. It can easily be explored in a couple hours, and is just down the road from the Ho-Sta-Geh restaurant. Enjoy the giant rocks and then have a dinner at the restaurant on the rocks as the sun sets. You won't forget the experience. Letchworth is pretty safe. The trails are well maintained and have hand rails and guards in most spots that present any danger. The views are worth the trip even if you decide to chain the kids to a tree while you see it. To go into the gorge, they almost have to purposely jump off one of the cliffs, or be thrown off. Come to think of it, you might better chain them to the tree.

Our friends did it this way and said it was a great way to stay in Olean, they stayed at the Country Suites Inn ( has the heated swimming pool and juacuzzi ) right across the street from Bonas, they ate at the Hickey with the students, ( the Mongolian BBQ is top notch ) by far the one of the best places in town for food.
Last summer went with guide on a hike, bike an paddle tour down the Allegeny River it was great we even saw a pair of Bald Eagles - one of our best vacation events in Olean! The guide even does Fly Fishing escapes in both NY and PA waters.
You have alot of good info to choose from. The river guide is private, very active and books early.

Snipe - about an hour and a half east of olean, the finger lakes begin. You can rent homes at just about any price range right on the lakes. In the western lakes, both keuka and seneca are lined with wineries for the wife, and watkins glen at the southern end of seneca is a spectacular half-day hike, plus you can catch boating trips, or even rent boats. You can rent canoes and kayaks on keuka and I presume on seneca. Letchworth is a short drive away. Personally I like keuka - it's smaller with some good eateries on the water. You can rent a place on the water, get up, make coffee and just go sit on the dock to start the day, with the kids swimming right there - then take any of several day trips, come back and watch the sun go down on the dock - very relaxing. Niagara Falls would be a full day trip, but do-able - and if you can squeeze in a day in Toronto - your kids would love the CN Tower - make them walk across the glass floor @ 1200 ft up - google cn tower glass floor - it'll freak them - it did mine.

As previously mentioned, Cave of the Winds is a definite stop. If you don't want to put the little Snipesters on a leash, though, Three Sisters Islands might be out -- you can walk right up to the edge of the mighty Niagara just above the falls, with nothing to hold you back. (I love the place, but you'd probably be a nervous wreck trying to watch the kids.) And remember, you're currently all right with a driver's license/birth certificate to get into Canada and back, but the new passport law is supposed to take effect in June. gocanada.about.com/od/canadatraveloverview/qt/uscitizenborder.htm

I want to thank you all for the vacation ideas you have given me on this thread. I am excited about coming up in the summer with my boys.
Good luck the rest of the way. I hope we play again in Atlantic City. If it is for the title I will talk to Sean about throwing you a bone. I like that the place was packed and loud. Your fanbase is a credit to SBU. Hope you liked that sick freak Brad Redford. He is just a frosh. Our crowd flat out loves that kid and his deep water threes.
Thanks again for the ideas. I am working to put some of them into action. Good luck Bona.

My attraction to Allegheny is the primitive element. Going down that river would be a voyage in the American wilderness. At least that is the way I like to envision it. I don’t know if any of you have any experience with it so I am asking. If you're going on an overnight canoe trip down the Allegany River, make sure you bring Fr. Dan's cel phone # as you may incur contingencies requiring an heroic rescue such as the one he provided back in the 80s. Whoo-Momma.

The World War II museum in Eldred, PA. Ahhh, Eldred. In the 80s we partied in Eldred like it was 1999. There was a little saloon right there on Main Street I just forget the name of. The Ensanian Physicochemical Institute is also located in Eldred if you're really trying to stretch your vacation dollar.
