Frosh Admissions is significantly down this year. Just 472 compared to 563 last year. Economy is a major factor. That is a HUGE problem. To allocate the fixed costs of the university over a student population that is almost 20% smaller is simply not sustainable. Hopefully this is the bottom in student popluation and things will improve. I would think the economy would be a neutral or perhaps a slight positive for Bonas. We are more expensive than state schools, but they are full and can't take any more students than they have been taking. Bonas is substantially less expensive than most other private colleges, so I would think that would steer some students our way. Bonas must continue to make themselves more attractive to potential students. The overall college population peaked a year or two ago and will now be decreasing each year from here. Whether it is non-scholarship sports (we are idiots not to offer a men's lacrosse program, the fastest growing sport in the nation and huge in NYS and the Southern Tier), or new academic majors, or continued physical improvements; we need to keep improving the Bonas experience and changing it to meet students' needs in order to compete effectively for students. It is not a choice. It is simply a matter of survival.

According to the materials picked up by my daughter at the Admissions office this week, Bonas offers Club LaCrosse for men, so we're still getting some of the athletes who want to play at that level.

The support issue in Charlotte is around building a $23.5M stadium that would be expandable to 40k people. I don't think anyone would suggest a project of that size at SBU.
I believe the thoughts here were along the lines of adding a non scholarship team (football or LAX) and playing on an all purpose turf field that could also be used for existing sports.

If Bonas were to bring back football, considering the fact that we are a division 1 program, wouldn't we have to be D1 in football, atleast at the level of programs like UMass, Richmond, etc. (the former 1-AA, now FCS(?) level?

I would like to officially nominate the Denver Broncos throw-back uniform as the future Bona football team's new threads. Frank Tripucka and Gene Mingo would be proud! Trivia from the back of a football card. Gene Mingo was the leading scorer in the AFL's first season. Other interesting trivia about Gene Mingo: 1. He is the NFL's first black kicker. 2. He scored the winning touchdown in the first AFL game on a punt return. 3. Owns record for most TD passes by a halfback in a game (2). He did this against the Bills. 4. Still owns the Broncos record for longest touchdown run (82 yards). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_MingoInteresting article on Gene Mingo www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_4248101

thanks Chuck for that bit of trivea. I think that game( Mingo's two td passes) was played in a snow storm ( in the second half). Bills were leading 38-7 and it ended up a 38-38 tie. Doing this from memory.......I was a young boy but that game sticks in my mind...so do the socks...lol
