blogs.buffalonews.com/campus/2009/09/ub-lands-recruit-from-newark.htmlUB lands recruit from Newark The UB men's basketball program received a verbal from 6-6, 230-pound power forward Javon McCrea from Newark High School in Newark, N.Y. Sounds like UB got a steal. McCrea is a three-star recruit by Rivals.com who was offered scholarships by Georgetown and UMass. His You Tube clip indicates he's a prototypical Mid-American Conference power forward. He averaged 20 points and 15 rebounds as a junior and is regarded as the top player in Section V. why did we never go after this kid hard? He is a beast. He can run the floor and is like a dejaun blair clone.. a lil smaller in size but such long arms...i guess AAU is where he really shined he's right in bona's backyard

grades are his problem. he'll be lucky to last the season. being able to read, write and count is a big plus.

We are talking to higher level recruits than this.

I talked with several of my old coaching contacts in N.J.about this kid. The consensus was he is a head case who" pouts like a small child" when the game is difficult ,and he does something poorly. It takes him a while to get back in the game after one of these "frequent" incidents.
I would think we just got our fill with Mo Thomas on poor behavior. This is the primary reason we have stayed away from this kid and others like him.

if he has the talent then isn't it up to the "higher level" coach to teach the kid the game? and as far as grades, i can recall another bona grad who did pretty well for SBU w/ a lackluster high school academic background.
A poor student in high school, Lanier was rejected by his first college of choice, Canisius, because of his grades. But with his athletic skills no longer in doubt, he was eagerly courted by more than 100 other schools; he selected St. Bonaventure.

I saw him play twice last year and never really thought he was A 10 material but I am not paid to do these things. I definitely saw the pouting when things were not going right. I saw him throw a nice forearm shiver at a kid after he was being bodied in the paint a little bit. I agree that there are probably bigger and better players on our radar.

grades are his problem. he'll be lucky to last the season. being able to read, write and count is a big plus. He is a B student i've read. He had an 82% average in high school. Pretty good grades for someone who can't read or write. Javon McCrea - Newark On track: Two-time AGR pick could end up playing at a Division I college. Key stats: Scored 20 points with 15 rebounds and 5 blocked shots a game. Academics: 82 average. List of recruiters: Six-foot-six, 230-pound power forward said he has heard from Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Nevada-Las Vegas and Syracuse. www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20090410/SPORTS0808/304100012/1007/SPORTSJavon is good friends with Calvin Betts a senior on the UB team. Betts will be an important mentor for Javon. UB is a good fit.

Do not have to play on the same team to be a mentor. Rochester and Buffalo is a hour and 15 minutes away. They are close friends, who spend a lot of time together.

Calvin played for R-H but grew up in Lyons, I believe. I was blinded by my assumption that nyc does not in fact know personal anecdotes about every person discussed on the board. Consider my post deleted.
