I'm sure glad football season is here! Please update us on their first scum.
With the fantastic season the Outlaws had last year it's odd that the Olean Times Horrible and their ace reporter "Pollack" are not covering the games. But, I'm sure she's too busy covering TO and the Buffalo Jills.
Hard to believe that she is still on the staff at the OTH?

Were you trying to be clever or did you really not know that Chuck Pollack is a man?
Just a little Newpaper 101, the town newspaper covers what the people of the town care about (i.e Bills football, Sabres hockey, local high school football, etc.). Why would they care about a club sport insular to SBU?
I think the BV covers it enough as is and hits probably the only demographic in the Olean/ Allegany area that really cares about the team: the students.

the outlaws are 2-1 in their first year as D-1. They beat UB and Binghamton and were ranked #24 in the country before dropping to Syracuse in a sloppy rain game at home last saturday 22-12 You can follow them at www.sburfc.com they do a good job updating the site everyweek. Another good site is that will give you alittle insight into D-1 rugby is www.uspowerrugby.com/club/?id=mcd1 Its worth a look Oh and coach, there were more people at the syracuse game in the rain then there were at any bona baseball game on a sunny day

Thanks Stud. Just didn't have time to update my post.
Coach - get off couch and go to one of the Rugby games and you will see why this would be a better fit for SBU than football. And less expensive to suit up a team ie no helmets shoulder pads and what ever else you have to buy FOR THOSE LITTLE BABIES SO THAT THEY WONT GET HURT.
keplerjd - the Outlaws are on their way to become a varsity team sport - support them... as for Pollack, I'm puzzled in how he can keep his job at the OTH. There are new hires at the OTH that need to replace him. "Just a little Newpaper 101, the town newspaper covers what the people of the town care about".... HOG WASH.... Pollack is too lazy to make a five minute call and insert a ten line column.
GO OUTLAWS

Whenever I want a laugh, I look at a room 109 post. You couldn't carry Chuck Pollack's pencil without tripping over your feet.

And less expensive to suit up a team ie no helmets shoulder pads and what ever else you have to buy FOR THOSE LITTLE BABIES SO THAT THEY WONT GET HURT. room109, have you ever played football? If so, you'd know there is much more contact in football than rugby. If I wanted, I could go a whole game in rugby without hitting or being hit. That can't happen in football. Plus in football you can be tackled by several people. More times than not, in rugby if someone is going to be tackled they get rid of the ball. In football that only happens on trick plays and instead you try and run the person over. Tackling is also different because in football you are trying to prevent the opposition from advancing one more inch, where rugby your goal in tackling is to get the person on the ground. Not saying Rugby isn't a tough club sport, but let's not make them out to be the toughest people to walk the earth because they don't wear pads. They don't wear pads because contact is much less limited and restricted. Just thought I'd point that out to you, but I'm sure you already knew it. Now if I could just get me one of those sweet jackets.

I think the team tries hard enough to think they're the toughest people to walk the earth, they don't need 109's help.

seems to me the outlaws should get their msg board, if they don't already have one.
Even with all the pads, a football player's body breaks down much quicker than a tugger's does because of the frequency and level of impact. A running back is done by his early 30s while ruggers can play much later because they don't take the physical pounding that football players do over the course of their career. It's very common for a club rugby team to have a few players that are well beyond their college years playing.
Basic fact is that you can play rugby without pads but it would be complete carnage if you played football without pads. Now if only football teams had those sweet jackets.

Rugby is thee sport. The SBU outlaws are the single most focussed athletes on campus. They live in the weight room and their practices resemble a marine bootcamp. The athletes are recruited in with what can be described as pure rugby pedigree backgrounds. I think that many of you out there think rugby players at SBU are undisciplined party boys that can't play a sport at the intercollegiate level but these guys are finely tuned athletes...rugby is such a big time D I sport that a small DIII school in Vermont is the national D I champion. Heck even a few of the outlaws played football in high school.

Ernie, nice sarcastic post! First off you are flat out wrong about a small school from Vermont being D1 national champs! Look at this link and you will see www.calbears.com/sports/m-rugby/spec-rel/national-college-ranks.html If you look at the schools listed you will not see your Vermont school even listed in the top 25 in the nation. I have played football and rugy in college. I have also played rugby at an elite national level. Let me tell you this my friends, it is much tougher to play a 80 minute rugby game than any football game. For you who are unaware, you don't get breaks in rugby (except halftime), its a running clock. You are both offensive and defensive. If you get subbed out you can not go back in the game (with the exception being blood sub). Rugby is much more physically demanding than football. I say this from first hand experience. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that they are the most superior athletes on earth (as they tend to flock to the high paying sports/scholarship sports) but they are well conditioned and dedicated just the same. You should give them kudos for their efforts instead of trying to tear them down. What other sport can you beat the living @#$% out of eachother then go have a beer afterwords? The comaradery is unmatched!

How many girls that you crushed on were stollen by ruggers anyway?

Pepp, as far as the clock is concerned it is exactly like soccer. If there are injuries in the game that stop play it is at the ref's discretion how much time to add on at the end of the game/half. You don't typically have many substitutions (occ. strategic for fresh pack members usually) as your best 15 start the game.
