it appears that Richmond is making lots of postive moves and could be in the upper echelon of the A10 for a long time!
-----
some details of the verbal:
DERRICK WILLIAMS TO RICHMOND
St. Anthony forward Derrick Williams has given a verbal commitment to Richmond.
“I verballed,” Williams, a Staten Island, N.Y. native, wrote in a text. “I like the campus, the social life, the coaching style, the players and the academics.”
The 6-foot-7, 245-pound Williams chose Richmond over St. Bonaventure, St. Joe’s, Penn State, Fordham and Hofstra. Tennessee, Missouri and Rutgers also showed interest.
“They showed him a lot of love, from the beginning when they first saw him. We went to Richmond’s Elite Camp for half a day [this summer]. They saw him and right away offered him. They said, ‘We want this guy,’” said Eric Harrield, Williams’ AAU coach with Sports University.
“They were at every one of his games all summer. No matter where we were, they were there.”
----
in addition:
St. Anthony guard Eli Carter visited Robert Morris this weekend and “really enjoyed himself,” Harrield said.
“He got to watch practice and was really surprised by the talent level they have.”
He will decide between Robert Morris and St Bonaventure..

I wish Williams well except against the Bonnies. His conflicting but generally disparaging remarks made about Bona following his visit could serve as nice locker room postings before we play Richmond. He sure surprised Schmidt & Watson with his statements.

wgt, you nailed the "conflicting" part of Derrick's personality correct, according to NORTHSTARBBALL.com DERRICK now says "he will sifn late and listen to other schools." HUH? no comment. He gave Richmond a verbal, but is going to sign late and confirms he remains open to other schools. He also stated St. Bonaventure was his other finalist with Richmond. With Zagsblog stating Carter's final 2 being the Bonnies and Robert Morris, is it a stretch to hope the Bonnies can still sign both? After all the Bonnies are the final 2 for both players and they've stated they would like to play together. Below is Northstar article. The #12 ranked player in Northstar Basketball's list of New Jersey's Fab 45 Upperclassmen has made his college decision. Derrick Williams '10, a 6'7 power forward from St. Anthony's (NJ) committed to Richmond today, according to a source close to the situation. Williams confirmed the commitment when I caught up with him, but also let it be known that this does not mean he is done with the recruiting process. Williams cited a number of different reasons for his pledge to the Spiders. "I took an official [visit] there [in the] beginning of September and I loved it off the [bat]. I was there for their elite camp and that's when they offered me. I love the academics, [and] also, this team has always been there at every game, every practice, the whole nine. I love the coaching staff, the players, and the overall style of play." The Staten Island, New York native, who listed St. Bonaventure as his other finalist, feels that he made a sound choice. "I think it's a solid one. I can make an impact right away. I can help the team, and it's a good fit for me," replied Williams when I asked how it feels to have the decision behind him. I inquired of Derrick if he plans to recruit others to join him at the Atlantic-10 school, and he answered, "Yes, I will, one of the players on my team now, Lucious Jones." Jones is a class of 2011 prospect who is at St. Anthony's with Williams. Williams plans to sign "late" despite the fact that he has already committed and can sign a Letter of Intent in November. "I don't want to rush everything," responded Williams when I asked why that is. Does that mean he is not 100% committed to Richmond? "I'm not saying that. I think the decision I made is a solid one." He confirmed that this means he will remain open to other schools' recruiting pitches. blog.northstarbball.com/www.zagsblog.com/2009/10/19/lamb-selby-barnes-trip-to-kansas/

I'm sure that Williams' comments do not please Spider coach Goodman. The kid continues to confound those surrounding his signing process.

Chuck…You asked would it be a stretch to land Williams & Carter. It would indeed be a big stretch BUT within the whelm of possibility. That said, I believe that Schmidt & Watson would be far more concerned about Willliams as a Bonnie in light of his past statements & level of maturity. Williams’ skills match our needs but his overall outlook may now cancel out our interest.

In my opinion I don't think we would touch Mr. Derrick Williams for all of the reasons sited above.
He clearly seems more focused on the " social atmosphere" of the college he chooses. I noticed he stated academics were last.
As a parent whose daughter is a UR graduate I can guarantee that this is not a party school nor are social issues first and foremost.
Any division 1 coach worth his salt, is not going to accept an "open verbal". Who does this kid think he is?

What exactly were William's disparaging remarks against Bonas?

It's always the same. If he verballed to SBU, we'd be excited. Since its another school people immediately try to find reasons why it's probably better off, etc.
I'd much rather have an "open verbal" from him than not. In reality, ALL verbals are open until the paperwork is signed.

I agree with pepp. The reaction for a recruit going elsewhere is always the same on this board. If he doesn't choose Bonas there must be something wrong with him. Coach Schmidt I am sure puts his best foot forward with all the recruits and is happy to bat .300 as far as landing players. Also, it looks like we only have 2 or 3 scholarships to give so many of the gaping holes have been filled. Overall, the level of player we are targeting is climbing every year and we are up against some universities that really have more to offer alot of kids. The history of some our best players have been guys that flew a bit under the radar and became better once they arrived on campus. I really don't think that will change.

bigdopper.....I certainly can't speak for the Bandwagon. I don't feel there is "something wrong" with Williams because of his negative comments about Bona & possibly looking elsewhere. I do have a concern, that I'm sure is shared by coaches, in terms of considering bringing in a student athlete who publicly states feelings that clearly indicate that Bona would be a bad match. As I stated I wish Williams well & am sure, as he matures, he will learn to make statements that are less contradictory.
maplehurst.... Watson & Schmidt were stunned when they read the following public comments attributed to Williams following his visit with them:
Williams, a 6Œ6 250 lbs. Staten Island, NY native had many things to say about his recent visit. Not including many positive statements.
After saying the social aspect of the school [is] the only problem I have, Williams continued to speak the truth about his feelings toward the St. Bona experience.
The aggressive big-man said the relationship with the coaches is good, but also stated, St. Bonnies is going to always find and have good players, I don't think they really want me.
After asking why the rising senior felt unwanted by the A-10 school, Williams responded by saying They offered me but I can't feel it. as of now see myself there.
I didn't enjoy the visit there, everything that was presented to me was great, wasn't really feeling it though, says Williams.
