Healthcare fields = nursing, physicians asst, etc. Fields related to senior care so there is someone to take of us old geezers in a few years. Computers = but more in the areas of gaming, app development etc. robotics? Develop a program to build a pipeline from some of the better community colleges. Something along the lines of automatic acceptance at a certain GPA. Community colleges are bursting at the seams because students are taking that route to save on tuition dollars. SUNY probably already has something similar, but having a private, Catholic option may appeal to some. And no law school! "fields related to health care...to take care of us old geezers..."...way to go, pbd76...very relevant to this old geezer...would love to see bonas have a gerontology major...also like your idea, jimmy chitwood, of a bachelor and/or master's degree in social work... congrats to all those who worked to land that 600k grant to recruit 25 talented students in science, technology, engineering and math...those kind of grants will help to boost the enrollment and do it adding quality students!...

Due to my donation history I am on the sucker list for just about every Christian, military, conservative PAC, medical aid, and classical liberal education fundraiser. I have been donating to Hillsdale College for many years but was a non-donor for many years before that who enjoyed their great "Imprimus" circular. Not a day goes by without multiple solicitations in the mailbox. Today I received one from Ashland University, with which I have no connection whatsoever. (Bear with me as I will eventually come to a point here.) They want money to fund the "50 Core American Documents Initiatve" so they can reach as many teachers and students as possible with the true story of what has made our country exceptional. No, I won't be sending a check as my wife has confiscated my checkbook, but it sounds like a worthy cause. My point: America is a fabulously wealthy country and it is filled with generous people who want to aid the causes they believe in. If SBU would identify and clearly articulate its brand, e.g. Franciscan witness in a fallen world, they would find that cause would be taken up by millions who share the same values. I believe Franciscan University of Steubenville may have cornered the market on my example, but you get where I'm headed.

MSW programs typically include "Tracks" or "Areas of Concentration." Gerontology is one of them.

This post would probably take us off course, away from the discussion of how to help SBU grow, but the fracking discussion has many variables people don't understand. Some of the negatives are way off base with a lot of misinformation out there. Wastes, toxic or otherwise, can be handled by proper mitigation such as sending to treatment plants that could be built. There have been few, if any, major environmental problems such as well blow-outs. Most problems are very minor.
The economic benefits are many. Just travel through PA and notice the mom-and-pop businesses that have sprung up as offshoots of the Marcellus drilling. I was just traveling through that state this past weekend, and it is still a rustic, beautiful area, unlike NY that is dying with a moribund economy and class of people that is constantly getting lower and lower.
Having grown up in the oilfields of this area and seen how the economy and quality of life have dropped, we are missing out on a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Pitt Bradford has a petroleum engineering program, which, from what I have heard is doing very well. With our current state administration and the anti-energy lobby in this state, I doubt such a major/program would ever succeed (or even be contemplated) in NY.
I'm sorry to go off on a tangent, and the fracking debate could go on forever, but I don't think petroleum engineering would be worth it here, and oh, how I would like to see energy companies and jobs be "re-energized"n this area.

Some very good ideas have been shared overall from previous posts.
With Bonaventure enrollment low and budget limited currently my belief is we need to do what Bonas does best first before we start thinking of additional majors. However, I do believe that we must do research in looking what other Universities within a certain radius are offering while also looking at the positions i.e. healthcare for the future etc. Some very good points have been raised.
Some ideas include:
*Continue to lead with Business, Education, JMC, but make them strong and develop more with the times. St Joes has a focus to their business program i.e. Pham & Food Marketing Mgt and Marketing. *Offer MS in Business not just MBA. Use this within the Western NY Region and if it makes sense Wkd Program in Rochester, and Buffalo, and at Bonas. Sponsor Coach Bus Trips from Priority Markets to Bonaventure for the weekend for students including parents invited to attend. Dont assume everyone will make the drive to campus. Once they get on the bus, The Bonaventure story begins, but allow them to see Bonaventure in action.
*Athletics - Bring in Mens Lacrosse and remove another Mens sport. College Lacrosse continues to rise and schools our size are getting great attention and constant males playing and with Lacrosse gaining in popularity it means you will get the name of the school in the eyes of the young at an earlier and earlier age, plus media from playing Seina, Marist, Hofstra, Hopkins, ND, U Albany, Loyola, Princeton, Cuse... Use Lacrosse to help you get infront of High School AD's and High School College Offices.
*Admissions - Not to knock this department at all, but we need to make sure that Bonnies are running and recruiting. What I mean is we need people that are outgoing, friendly, will connect with parents and students. We need people that the prospective students and parents believe in and want their children to be around. We need confidence when presenting in front of a room of prospects and we need admissions to better leverage alumni in every market by inviting every alumni to bring new Bonaventure material to their local high school, church, etc.
Recent college graduates on top of their new day job would receive a small payment from Bonaventure for one to two years of service (2nd job) attending college fairs for Bonas and sharing leads back with the admissions counselor for that region. We cannot expect counselors to be on campus and recruiting, so how can swe get creative with recent graduates.
All Material to sell campus must be current and sharp for career fairs.
*Partnerships - Everyone knows we are talking with Hilbert, but why not talk to Siena (our sister school) to share resources for admissions? It might sound crazy, but if one counselor is going to a high school in ABC, State why not have that rep share their school, while having the material and brief info on the other school. Its a crazy idea, but might have legs in some markets.
*Priority Markets - do we have a set list of priory markets? Do we have key alumni in those markets having montlhy meetings with Bona personal on how to attract more students? We cannot expect recruiting from several markets with decisions being made at a desk in Hopkins, Doyle, Francis hall. Put together a small group per market i.e. Westchester / Fairfield County, Ohio, VA, WPA, North Jersey, Mass etc.
*Alumni - contact inform and ask each to come back to campus to learn more, while stressing the need to build and extend our network and knoweldge of Bonas. Does each alumni have the latest update on campus, students, sticker on their car? Since graduating in the early 2000's more people have stopped me in parking lots, traffic light etc saying. "You, went to Bonaventure... so did... What a great place". Its a rolling billboard.
*Partner with JCC, Monroe Community College and others while sharing students that cannot afford a four year degree ability to understand financial aid process, and ability to transfer in after a year at home, but make it easily understood.
*Use Catholic Church and Franciscan Network - Do we talk to Franciscan churches around the Northeast, and high schools sharing the story of Bonaventure?
Just some quick ideas in a rough format.

Use Lacrosse to help you get infront of High School AD's and High School College Offices. I have nothing against Mens Lacrosse, but I do know there are Title 9 complications adding or dropping sports. Shockingly, I'm no expert in Title 9 compliance, but I'm fairly certain it demands a nearly-equal spread of scholarships between mens and womens athletes. I assume lacrosse rosters are somewhere between 18-25 student athletes, which means any sport cut must boast a similarly-sized roster. Following that line, only three mens programs eligible for cutting: swimming (one of our more-successful programs); baseball (a lot of money spent on infrastructure); or soccer. I think swimming and baseball are safe for the reasons mentioned. Soccer has one advantage on lacrosse: it's cheaper to field a team. I would also love to see a comparison between participation in soccer and lacrosse at the house-league and high-school levels. I know lacrosse is very popular in the northeast.

Lower the drinking to 18 on campus. I know a lot of kids would come to SBU for that alone.

Can we stop with the talk of adding men's Lax? I went over why it isn't feasible in this previous thread but maybe I should try another angle. bonabandwagon.proboards.com/thread/12294/major-announcement-athletics-coming-soon?page=3The talk of adding MLax seems to hinge on the idea that it will attract students. Let's assume we drop baseball for MLax. Now we have wasted the resources that were given by baseball alumni and supporters for the baseball facility. We will then no longer have the 30 baseball players and will replace them with 30 Lax players. So the move does nothing for the bottom line but upsets alumni that have supported the school. For a school that has so much pride in the alumni support this would be a huge impact. Net loss. If we simply add the sport, what is the goal? We would still have to add more women's sports to be compliant. But let'snot address that major obstacle. Rather, lets look at the benefits of adding MLax. I assume that since most D1 teams average 400 fans a game no one is making the claim that the sport will be a revenue generator through ticket sales or fan hype. The idea that a SBU MLax program would be playing the final weekend of the season is crazy so there will be no media coverage. Additionally, due to new schools adding SBU will become less competitive since the schools that add in the major conferences will pour a lot more resources into the program and there will be no tradition at SBU. So that only leaves the idea that the program would attract students that otherwise wouldn't attend. If we go conservative and operate the program in keeping with the level of WLax which went winless this past year we would have a MLax team that is not competitive in D1. But that is fine because the addition of the program would be based on the D3 sports model to attract tuition dollars. So we spend $500k a year on the sport which includes a coaching staff that costs $170k in salary and benefits in order to attract 10-12 new students a year. How many new students do you think three additional admissions personnel getting paid $40-50k a year could bring in? What if they were also given the travel budget of a college sports team? If it is more than four new students a year for each of them then MLax is a waste of resources.
