Its great now that we are on the new board and the old guys are back putting up some good information without having to worry about criticism from no name posters.
Also from what was discussed on here about James it seems that the university did not want Jamil Terrell 2 and they didn't want to go down that road again. Good move.

Question: Why was Solomon even recruiting James, given the situation? Why would he go get a verbal and then have to renege; that doesn't seem right?

Not positive about this, but I believe it was Lex James who backed out. He never verballed, he just said he was interested in SBU, and we were interested in him. He said "I have to visit and see the place before I make my decision".
A visit was scheduled, on the weekend of 5/7, but for some reason, it never happened. Whether he changed his mind, or we did, I don't know.
We picked up a 4-year player in Tyler Benson about that time instead. Maybe that's why the James visit didn't happen, because we signed Tyler, or maybe it was something else.
Either way, I would rather have a kid like Benson, who has great grades and we have him for 4 years' than a borderline (?) student that we would only have for 2 years.

Fox -- Now we are looking at Osby (PF - similar player to James); that would tell me that Benson's signing did not preclude James.

Great news Fox & thanks for keeping us informed. Now, why don't you take yourself into the Burton on Saturday, your special day, for that Burton Burger & Brew that has been awaiting you for almost 2 years. If Steve has forgotten just mention my name & he'll remember.

yeah, I didn't see anything on James not coming...can someone give a quick summary? thanks! It is my understanding the Bonnies were not even close to signing Lex James. Coaching staff inquired about Lex and there was a date set for him to visit. It was James who made the hasty comment that he was signing with the Bonnies and not Solomon. I believe his grades are an issue.

It is understandable for Solomon signing JUCO's, it would be difficult going through another 2 win season. I believe Solomon would sign higher rated players by signing players like Relph and Osby. Transfers who become discouraged with their PT at higher profile programs. It is extremely unlikely for former top 100 recruits (like Relph and Boggans) to consider the Bonnies after high school. But after a year of sitting the bench, the Bonnies with increased PT, would look more attractive than before.

It is my understanding Brian Gibbs is gone. I'm not sure for the delay. Gibbs scholarship would make one available for Osby. There will not be an official announcement on Osby until Gibbs officially transfers. There can't be 15 scholarship players listed.

I only followed New Mexico a little, but I would venture a guess that the reason Osby did not log more minutes is because he played the same position as Danny Granger (19 points 9 rebounds per game). Granger was a 1st team all conference player, and has NBA talent and size. There are very few freshman that would have taken away minutes from Granger.

Osby seems to fit coach's current strategy of getting some cover for 2 years out as 'security' and then taking a shot at top shelf players. I'm disapppointed James didn't work out - a 6'9" shot-blocking, rebounding, dunking PF would have been a great compliment to next year's roster. Osby sounds like an animal - and that's great. I just hope they put the measuring tape to him last weekend. You can be a kick-butt PF in high school at 6'5" and 210 - but not in the A-10, no matter how much heart you have. Just ask Robert Cheeks or Brian Gibbs. I hope Osby is in fact 6'7" and 230+ as listed elsewhere. Keep up the great work Coach !

Max. scholarships is 13.
Benson's signing took Gibbs' 'ship; someone else must leave for Osby.

While all the Lex James talk was going on here, it was being reported that he had comitted to URI.
Is that where he ended up?
And, I agree, that if the grades are at all questionable, were better off without him.
Things are definitely looking up.
