PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Duquesne University's top basketball player has been suspended from the team following his arrest on marijuana possession charges, school officials said Tuesday.
Bryant McAllister, who will be a senior next season, was arrested May 10 in Whitaker, a small Pittsburgh suburb next to his hometown of West Mifflin, where he was a standout in high school. Police found a shoe box containing four or five ounces of marijuana in a car McAllister was driving after he was stopped for running a stop sign and consented to a search, Whitaker police Chief Jamie Evans said. Evans said McAllister acknowledged that the drugs were his and was charged with marijuana possession and possession with intent to deliver marijuana.
McAllister, a 6-foot-3 guard, started all 30 games last season, leading the Dukes with 16.1 points and 31 minutes per game.
McAllister couldn't immediately be reached through the university, and attempts to reach his family in West Mifflin weren't immediately successful.
Coach Danny Nee confirmed that McAllister was suspended pending the outcome of the criminal case, but said the suspension is essentially meaningless during the offseason.
"Don't you think we have to wait for the courts?" Nee asked. "He's not been convicted."
