Captainron-you are being a bit rough on people. 9/11 is history too and many people are not comfortable with the whole thing going on today with the movie, etc. I for one think that Gothard Lane will say anything to spin everything away from him. Obviously 85 interviews with no job speaks for itself. Gothard Lane needed to read his job description as Athletic Director and carry out his responsibilities. He was cow tailing to Big and Little Wick and the big jerk VBK. To Gothard it was all about the money-his money. I am sure his book will portray himself as the victim in the process. Not everyone caves into the almighty dollar but he did. As for his wife- did she ever step foot in Olean? Now they couldn't carry on conversations. This guy is so full of it it is dripping out his ears. He is a loser and a coward who failed at his position. Go write your book Gothard. I will be surprised if anyone would publish it or if anyone really cares about your situation.

bigdobber, if you are the CEO of a company and one of your divison heads comes to you asking for your to help control his dishonest VP supervisor who is breaking the rules and you do nothing to help him, then whose fault is it later on when it all blows up. As captainron says, lets be fair. And by the way did Lane take away your season tickets or something like that because you are pretty angry.

There's a line I heard in a song once that is pretty fitting for this whole situation. When there are things like mortgages and job security on the line - "The Guilty don't feel guilty, they learn not to."

Bona799....so this justifies Gothard Lane continuing to just sit on his hands after he makes a few gestures and then plead innocence? Come on. Let's be "fair"? This guy deserves very little pity. You know what? If it's me? Maybe I do make the same mistake Gothard makes. But then, I would be mad as hell at myself and live with the consequences. But no....he wants St. Bonaventure University to say "We're sorry" and try to make him feel better. He should just live with the guilt just like everyone else who was associated with this fiasco and stop feeling sorry for himself.

Bona799, The CEO of the University is the President. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees is not actively involved in day to day decisions and generally defers to the President to make these kinds of decisions. The buck stopped with Wick in my eyes. Am I bitter? I believe that the University has been mismanaged and has caused alot of it's own problems. When I went to Bonas, schools like Villanova, Providence, St. Joes, etc. were piers. By todays standards, academically much stronger and people are knocking the doors down to get in. What changed? I am hoping Sr. Margaret puts this school on the right track. It needs a change in direction. Outsiders have screwed alot of things up and I believe that we need to go back to Bona people who understand how things need to be done. I will be alot more tolerant with an alumnus than an outsider. Gothard Lane is a schill along with the Wicks and VBK. I don't live in the area so I don't get to many games but I have memories of how things were. We need an alumnus running the basketball program and I think by next year we will have one. I think Sol's JUCO quick fix will pick up a flat tire next year. Hope I am wrong but I am not impressed with him.

Ron Do whatever you think is right. No problems. I'll just sit this one out. That's fair enough. No worries. I can understand how the subject of Bill Swan is extremely touchy around this site. I honestly think that Swan was intimidated by Wickenheiser as well, though, which is why he deferred to him. Wickenheiser was a bully and a jerk. I know because he tried to bully me, but I wouldn't back down. Gothard Lane isn't the demon you all think he is. My original point is that hiring VBK wasn't his decision. It was Wickenheiser. Wickenheiser wanted VBK and didn't give a damn what other people thought. It's how he ran his university--if you disagreed with him, he either belittled you or fired you. And why is the fact that Mrs. Lane "never set foot" in Olean so relevant?

captainron-the only significance of Mrs. Lane never setting foot in Olean is that she now is complaining how she can't have a conversation with her husband about anything but bonas. Sounds like she was very comfortable with a long distance marriage and all of a sudden they have a communication problem. She is full of crap too, just like her husband. Spin, spin spin, ...

Captainron-Gothard Lane is trying to capitalize on a situation he helped create. Any settlement he received from the University hurts from a financial standpoint. His personal life is his business but it is amazing to me how people who hardly saw one another based on geography alone are now quick to blame his treatment at Bonas as putting a stress on their relationship. It is all about the money captainron...it's always all about the money. I stand by what I said. I think calling my comments "attacks" is a bit of a stretch. Anyhow, this topic has been beaten to death. Enough said. My apologies to anyone who feels I have been heavy handed when it comes to Gothard and the Mrs.

As a member of the Devereux society and a basketball fan, I have attended several of the annual men's basketball gala events. While Gothard was at Bona, his wife attended every gala and many other functions so she did set foot in Olean. By the way, the wife of former VP for PR, Dave Ferguson, never moved to Olean. His wife lived in Ohio while Dave worked at Bona. As you may know he just returned to Ohio. No one ever complained about his family never moving to Olean. Plus, I don't think Ron Z's wife lives in Olean.

As for myself, I think I can make a very very good estimate of what Gothard might say in the book, but nonetheless would read it anyways. Here are just a few points I have in list form. - Gothard's wife has not living in Olean is irrelevant. She works with horses and there was no place great to do so in Olean (not saying there are no places, but nothing lucrative that would bring about her moving). - Gothard's contract was up at the end of the season. He was told as everything was going down with the JT scandal aspect that he wouldn't be renewed by Wick. Thusly, he goes and blows the whistle to the NCAA. I agree someone should have stood up ahead of time, but he did it with a bit of hostility towards Wick in my mind. - I don't blame Gothard for making a law suit. Don't assume a lawsuit hurts the school that greatly BigDobber. Universities have insurance policies in place for such reasons. Will the premium go up, yes, but it will lower after a few years. So don't think all that truly hurts us that greatly. - I do like the sentiment of having a Bona guy running the show or atleast basketball, but what happens if we get a Bona guy to come in and we are just as bad in 5 years? - I think several publishers would be interested in the idea of Gothard's book. Remember scandal sells. - I agree with CaptainRon !

If Gothard did his job there would never have been a scandel because the player would never have put a uniform on. He then sues the University he let down. Now he is going to write a book to set the record straight. But he is the victim? It is all about the money for Gothard... it is always about the money. The guy is a schill.

The players held their own meeting the night before they were set to leave, voted not to play and thusly went on their way on that night. Only a handful of kids (not even five) were left on campus as the bus arrived. I know that Gothard as well as other athletic administration learned about the team not playing the next morning and began calling players and the coaching staff to find them and get them there. Several kids were already home (100s of miles away) and one senior was sitting in the Buffalo airport to go home. Outside of driving to find these kids and personally escorting them to the game, I think he did a pretty decent job. I am not suggesting he is the primary victim at all, but he was screwed over by this entire situation as he did what he could under a strangle hold by the President's office. Him coming out to write a book about it is fine by me. If anyone doesn't want to buy or read it, so be it, but realize he was being used a lot as a puppet by Big Wick.

Maybe he should have had the backbone to stand up to Wick then. Lane is free to do as he pleases with his book writing aspirations. I think he'd find a tough road trying to find a publisher. I won't buy it, borrower it from a library or pick it up from someone else's desk. In my view, he was an accessory to a fraud. I'd love to see this whole thing disappear in the rearview mirror.
I am wishing our new guys and returnees all the best for the 06-07 season. Work hard this summer. Loyal fans and alums are behind you all the way.
