I'm sorry did I miss them retiring Ahmad's jersey? I think there are a few more player from previous year who are much more deserving. Might as well delete the thread because this shouldn't even be a conversation at this time.

Doesn't bother me in the least..... Bona3550, Are you saying that because you're not a fan of retiring jersey's or do you have something against Killa? Because regardless, if your a Bonas fan you should give some thought because he was the only freshman to stick it out when the scandel hit and he did a hell of a job while here.... the fact of putting #1 in the Reilly Center should at least cross your mind...

really? OK, it's crossed and passed now.
No disrespect intended to Smith who had a very good career, but I don't think of him in the pantheon of great SBU players. He is highly deserving of our respect and our regard for enduring the woeful times but retiring a number, especially in basketball, needs to be reserved for only the great players.

I agree it shouldn't be retired for Ahmad. While I love the guy, he wasn't that special player who deserves this distinction. As far as Fereti wearing it next year, eh, I guess I would have liked to have gone one or two seasons before someone took it. Only for the fact that it will look awkward to the eye seeing a brand new guy sporting the number worn by the face of the team the past two years.
But, from what I've heard from other players, he should be one of our best players next year. So, atleast it's not going to be a scrub.

I think Amhad did really good in these past seasons considering the circumstances, but I also dont think his number should be retired--he is not up there with Lanier and the rest.... ...who knows, maybe the new guy will have us retiring #1 sooner than we know it

I don't think Patrick Ewing should have had his number retired--he never won a championship with the Knicks, try as they may have. Ahmed couldn't do much with the Bona team around him. He was a good player--let's not dispute that--and a helluva guy, but not retire-his-number good.

I have the utmost respect for "Killa" as you call him for the reasons you mentioned. And I'm not against retiring numbers. It's just that Ahmad doesn't come to mind immediately when I think about the "greats" of the program's history. That may change with the passage of time, but right now I see no problem with someone else wearing #1

The mere thought of retiring his jersey because he stuck around during the scandal and was our best player is asinine. During the DeCarli years the teams weren't that much better and we still had 4 year players, should we retire their jersey's as well? Basically your argument is to reward somebody for honoring a committment. Not a lofty standard if you ask me. Sure you may hold him in high regard based on the circumstance but he still get a free education out of the deal. If you want to retire the "face of the program" during the bad times, there is list of players well ahead of him. Also don't forget there are several Bonnies who are much over-due for such an honor, and their careers where much more prestigious than #1. While I don't like to live in the glory days of Bona Basketball, there are certainly members of that era who are long over-due for such a recognition. We should start with them and work forward to more recent players. After all, in comparison, many of the recent names people have offered up pale in comparison to the legends that deserve to be hung from the rafters of yester-year.

During the DeCarli years the teams weren't that much better and we still had 4 year players, should we retire their jersey's as well? Check the records remus....This year's team will have to win 22 games just to tie DeCarli's record over three years. Those teams were much better than what we've seen over the last two years. I realize that circumstances certainly were much different for Soloman when he took over the program... DeCarli won 13 games in each of his last two seasons. No contract extensions came his way after his first year when he only won 5 games, and his contract wasn't renewed after his third year. Do you think Soloman will be fired if he wins 13 this year?

I believe that unless Solomon has a 16 plus win season he should go. Even at that he should only be given a one year renewal.

Easy. Ahmad was tough. Damn tough, tough when it wasn't fashionable to be so. But to say an incoming recruit shouldn't be allowed wear "his number?" That's a little much. Young men, for better or worse (James Williams, Michael Schmidt), think about things like that.
By the way, wanna hang a jersey? Two words: Mark Jones. Perhaps our best guard in A-10 history.
