Well, I'm glad that the accusations are being investigated instead of ignored. Hard to believe that Father Gervase would be involved in abuse and hope that the investigation clears him. With the recent NY law giving abuse victims a year to pursue a civil action without regard to the statute of limitations, this could potentially open up SBU to a lawsuit if Gervase is found to be culpable. We sure don't need anything like that.

I dont have any comment regarding the charges, butI feel the need to comment about Father James Cairnan Haggerty who I always think of as Father Cairnan. I have known Fr. Cairnan since I was one of first enrollees in Archbishop Walsh back in 1958. He was my Vice-Principal and teacher during those formative years. The Father Cairnan I knew was kind, thoughtful, and had a wonderful if slightly offbeat humerous bent. He was also close with my parents and maintained lifelong contact with them. I can't think of my time at Walsh without fond memories of the good friar. In the late 50s and early 60s before tobacco became taboo, his always carried a sligntly chewed cigar in his hood, and outside the classroom would pull it out and stick it in his mouth. Can't swear to it, but my memory tells me that he pulled one out once and it was already lit. He was a fine man, friar, and role model for Walsh students.

This latest round of allegations remind one of the Salem witchcraft trials.......baseless accusations made....guilty enough. Complaints made many years after the death of these priests brings huge doubt as to the veracity of the chareges. This flawed process is fed by a media hungry to crucify any Catholic priest regardless if the allegations are ancient and have no basis in fact. Remember well that under our constitution all are innocent until proven guilty not in the popular press, but in a court of law.
Father Gervase taught several theology classes that I enrolled in, and also served as the Dean of Men for part of my tour of duty at Bonas. I have nothing but the highest level of respect for him. He was always a mature voice of reason, and a completely respected professor. His course entitled "The elements of Christian Marriage" was extremely popular because it touched on issues that you would be encountering later in life. His guidelines were just excellent. He was beloved on campus.
It is easy to impugn the reputation of the dead, for they are unable to defend themselves, shame, shame, shame on the media especially Channel 7 in Buffalo for this latest outrage. This just another aspect of a continuing anti Catholic wave being promoted by the media. Constant references to allegations but never any coverage to the tremendous good works performed daily by Catholics in caring for sick, the poor, the homeless, and the oppressed. The media is at war with our faith and our faith principles of protecting the sanctity of life, and they will stop at nothing in their efforts to defeat us, and disparage our magisterium.

I am all for thorough investigations in matters of alleged abuse. In fact, it is the policy of SBU, the Northeastern Province and the Buffalo Diocese to investigate abuse and harassment allegations promptly and thoroughly. I feel sure that the allegations against Father Gervais will prove groundless. BUT....if the allegations are not investigated that violates the multiple policies mentioned and leaves the Church open to even more criticism to say nothing about demonstrating a lack of pastoral concern for a possible victim.

These allegations are decades old, including one allegation dating to 1948. That is an indication that this report is no more than an attempted money scam of the diocese and order I do not know what is. One allegation from the 1940's alleges that the Franciscan in question committed the alleged offense in Southern California, when in fact the priest was stationed at SBU for decades before and after the allegation.......a completely bogus charge designed for one specific action - a money grab. And the corrupt anti Catholic media buys into the fraud. Shameful.

Dr. DePerro is calling for the Buffalo Bishop to step down. Dr. D. has it right.
