I thought this was a great article from Jeff Uveino of Intrepid. Following are his 3 takeaways from the Alfred game. 1. "Alejandro Vasquez could be an impact player sooner than we thought" -- Jeff stated "When Vasquez was announced as a starter for the Bonnies, it probably came as a surprise to many. It certainly did to me." He also makes an interesting comparison with "After Vasquez’s performance, I can’t help but draw parallels to Kyle Lofton’s arrival on the scene in the exhibition last season. Before that game, little was known about Lofton, who was expected to come off the bench at point guard for last year’s Bonnies. Lofton scored 15 points against Alfred, went on to start every game for SBU." -- Jay is another freshman who started an exhibition game as a freshman. Jay and Kyle became the only freshmen of Schmidt to start the 1st game of the season. It will be interesting to see if AJ starts Tuesday against Ohio. After his impressive performance against Alfred, I'm betting AJ will be Schmidt's 3rd freshman to be an opening day starter. 2. "Planutis and Winston will complement each other well at power forward" -- Jeff shares an interesting comment from Schmidt “We run a ball screen motion offense, so (Planutis) can pop and shoot it, while (Winston) can pop and use his ‘junk in the trunk’.” Jeff also comments "Schmidt has repeatedly said that Winston has more bounce to his game and can attack on the inside." -- "Winston has more bounce to his game" is a perfect way to describe Justin's game. Justin is very quick off his feet, which is displayed by him having 3 blocks in just 21 minutes of PT. With his athleticism and quick "bounce" I can see Justin scoring a lot of garbage points off rebounds. Unlike Bobby who will "pop and shoot" I can see Justin with his height and athleticism taking it to the basket. -- I think Jeff should have included Rob in his article. Rob has a game that is different from Bobby and Justin. Rob is the true stretch 4, who is physical inside and can take his game outside. 3. "Ikpeze’s offseason work could make the Bonnies a lot more dangerous" -- Jeff stated "In the exhibition, he looked great on the offensive end. Ikpeze scored six points, which came off of two hook shots around the basket and one jumper from the free-throw line. He looked more comfortable on the offensive end than in years past." -- The big difference I noticed with Amadi was him being a lot quicker with his shot. In the past Amadi gets the ball in the low post. He would be slow with holding the ball and even slower when dribbling to shoot his short hook shot. Defense would collapse on Amadi and frequently he would turn the ball over. Amadi was much quicker with his shot against Alfred. I thought Jeff had a very insightful article and looking forward to future articles from him. intrepidsbu.com/2019/10/31/what-we-learned-from-st-bonaventure-alfred-exhibition/

Chuck complements Jeff's insightful article and I agree in looking forward to more in the future.
I also agree that Carpenter's performance merited commentary as did the play of Matt Johnson. Matt's 8 assists to only 1 TO demonstrated what we suspected. He can play the point. 3-6 shooting,3-4 FTs and 2 steals indicates he can play it at a level better than expected. He distributes, can attack, take contact, hang and finish while having the outside shot. Of course the opponent was not at the skill level he will be facing but Kyle struggled with 2 assists and 3 TOs while hitting 1-5 shots.
Many expected a lot from Rob and he proved our expectations were warranted. In just 17 1/2 mins he grabs 9 boards, and hits 5-7 while being a physical presence inside.
Can't put too much weight in a 90-45 win over a Div III team but there was much to like in our new talent.

One last thing, I think quite a few of us saw something about Vazquez that looked to be "special"...It's a little early yet but Schmidt HAS TO BE excited about this kid to START him in his first game, even against a Division III team. AJ seems to be a "WINNER" from the highlights I've seen of him AND his record of playing with national teams already at his young age....LET'S GO BONAS!!!

CoachSBU...I agree that the team played extremely well down the stretch after a miserable start that had some posters throwing in the towel early.
It is too early to judge just how good AJ will be. Coach Schmidt called him a scorer but wants better D. Some questioned his ability to catch onto the system and that might be a factor in playing time. Coach has indicated that he HAS caught onto their system as fast as anyone he has had at Bona.
Coach calling him a scorer is evidenced by his history not his 20 pts against Alfred. As soph at Bowne HS in Queens he was one of the top scorers in NYC (22 ppg) and beat Teachers HS for borough championship. Teachers were ranked #2 in NYC at that time. In two games against them he had 38 and 36 points. At TPS he was top scorer tied with 4 star PG Dawes at 17 ppg although playing fewer mins. Dawes is now at Clemson.
He only had 1 rebound in the exhibition. I expect that to change. At TPS (a big team) he was their #1 rebounder and always guarded bigger men inside.
In his profile video posted earlier he commented that some people knew him when he went to the Barclays with Justin. When we spotted Justin outside the Barclays I shouted "There's the Queens kid!" As AJ turned his head he had a big smile that someone recognized him from his 2 years at Bowne. Telling us he was joining Justin at Bona was nice to hear at the time but we realized kids may tell you what they know you want to hear.
As jh pointed out in an earlier post, playing at the Barclays is a big help in name recognition. Two weeks ago I did a college fair for Bona at the Westchester County Center(minor league Knicks play there) and SBU is largely unknown in the area unless they heard of Bonnies basketball. Metro NY hoops talent that see the A10 Tourney at Barclays will always cone away with the same feeling AJ had. Bona fans have numbers and make noise. Every player loves a passionate fan base and one that travels well. The venue has fantastic recruiting potential for area players we have interest in. When AJ and Malik (Queens, CTK) visit the Barclays in March there will be friends and family experiencing the passionate Bona fans and word will spread.
