For the life of me, I don't understand why we don't get into one of the NYC area holiday tournaments that always seem to attract an A-10 team, in particular at the Barclay Center. In recent years, teams like Richmond, VCU, UMass, even St Louis for gods sake have played in a holiday tournament at Barclays. Has anyone noticed who draws more fans every year when the A-10 tourney is in Brooklyn? I don't get it. We are a natural for a NYC area tourney and I can't remember the last time we got an invite to one down there. Saint Louis likes to play in the 3+1 events like the Barclays Classic and the Gotham Classic. They get three home games and one road/neutral game out of the deal. But it is expensive. You have to pay the event for it. You're required to pay the event and then they supply you with home games. The event pays the teams to travel to you for your home games and pocket the difference. You're also not paid or provided with tickets for your neutral cite game so you have to take on the costs for the good game you do get. The in arena attendance is actually not a main driver of the economics for these events. The TV rights is much more important so if there are more casual UMass viewers than the Bonnies it makes UMass more valuable. Richmond has had good teams over the years which probably opened the door to good events but it is more likely they are paying for events since they also have deep pockets. VCU, Dayton, and Davidson get their pick of events. Only one team per conference is permitted to be in an event so many events have to include teams outside of the major conferences and programs like Dayton, UConn, Gonzaga, VCU, etc have been the first to get calls to fill these slots. (UConn will actually find it harder to get into events now that they are in the Big East. Because they will compete with the other Big East teams for the one slot per conference rather than competing with the American for the slot.) Due to only being able to have one team per conference, often the weaker tournaments will have a late addition be a better program. They were the teams in the running for a better event but had one of the other teams in their conference selected by the other event so they were left with a lesser desirable event. Remember, Georgia and Clemson were late additions to the tournament field when the Bonnies played in the Cayman Islands. Sometimes events pick up these teams looking to find an event and sometimes the slots they hold open are not filled and they invite weaker teams or play the event with the reduced field but still have everyone get the same number of games.

I imagine Siena falls in the scrub category that larger tournaments tend to have. As others have said we are too good to fit into that category. The Orlando tournament was started by someone with MAAC ties and they stipulated every year that a MAAC team participate. Correct. The MAAC sponsors the event. Every exempt event must have a NCAA member school or Conference sponsor the event. Even if a school sponsors the event, they can only play in the evert once every four years (unless the school is located in Hawaii or Alaska). Which is why Charleston only plays in their own tournament in their own arena once every four years. As a part of the MAAC's deal with ESPN, they get one slot every year in the Orlando Invitation at Disney. The MAAC also sponsored the (Belfast) Boca event and sponsor the Tip-Off Classic at the Mohegan Sun Casino. Their deal with the Tip-off Classic does not get them a slot in the major bracket but gets them a slot as a traveling team. This year's major bracket was Virginia, Arizona State, St. John's, and UMass.

Hopefully the remaining two spots are better teams or else all the posters saying this years Belfast Boca Jam allowed or set us up for the paradise jam will have some explaining to do. What will they have to explain? To quote the famous Ricky Riccardo "Lucy, you've got some 'splaining to do!"

What will they have to explain? To quote the famous Ricky Riccardo "Lucy, you've got some 'splaining to do!" Some classic tV, Lucy and Desi caused so much laughter....early tV. I lived in NY City, we got our first tv in 1948, 5 channels....when I moved to Austin TX in 1971, we had 3 channels.....here is some I Love Lucy scenes: www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjlxQ1Y5iZ0

Playing Mercer for the privilege to play Weber State next year who could pass that up? Pass it up for what? What alternative was available? Not playing in an event this year which means you can’t play the hull allotment of games since you have to play in an event to reach the maximum number of games. Playing fewer ooc games would hurt them in A20 play.

I wouldn’t call this field noticeably better. Definitely won’t move the needle for SOS. Still two teams left, I am hoping they have some more mph. Playing fewer games would hurt them in A10 play by golly I never thought of that. We have to keep investing resources into the program so hopefully we can join our A-10 brethren in getting into better tournaments.

We have to keep investing resources into the program so hopefully we can join our A-10 brethren in getting into better tournaments. The Paradise Jam is a great event. It has been a long running and well operated event for many years. As a participating team, you can’t control the teams that get added to the event. Every year the event has name brand teams. The Bonnies joined the event a while ago. We have known for a long time they would be playing in this event in 2020. And at the time they joined all the information on the event was the previous years field. So there is an expectation that the field would be similar. 2018 - Kansas State, Missouri, Oregon State 2017 - Colorado, Wake Forest, Houston 2016 - N.C. State, Ole Miss, Creighton, Washington State Those were some of the teams in the three most previous fields at the time the Bonnies joined the event. For those that haven’t been to the event or to St Thomas, it is great. The weather is perfect and the event is well run. I recommend heading down. Since it is US territory you also don’t need a passport.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious history and location of tournament. I’m hoping the last two teams will be better, it feels like they have to be.

You guys are overreacting. Would you rather play the always beloved home-and-home with Canisius/Niagara?
Colorado State slaughtered us in Fort Collins in 2013 (went on to win a game over 8 seed Mizzou in the NCAA tournament). They've made a couple NITs since then and while they've been rebuilding post-Larry Eustachy, they look like they're getting back to their form they had for most of the 2010s. Bradley made the tournament last season and are usually competent in the underrated MVC. Long Beach has a couple recent NITs and a 2012 NCAA Tournament appearance. Weber State has made two of the last 6 NCAA tournaments and is the home of Damian Lillard. FIU is... well, probably worse than FAU.
There are still two spots open and I still like this field over FAU/UIC/San Diego. Also, I went to St. Thomas/St. John in 2012 on vacation and Boca Raton for last weekend's tournament. The USVI are 3,000,000 times cooler than Boca. Let's wait until we see who the other two teams will be and how the other 5 reported teams do this year before we freak out...
See you all down there in 11 months!

Since it is US territory you also don’t need a passport. VI boasts that it is the only place in the Caribbean where we don't need a passport, don't need to change money, can speak the language, and can drink the water.

I hope the Bonnies get the opportunity to face Bradley next year in the VI. After some down times, the Braves have enjoyed a resurgence and is now one of the Valley's best teams.

The U B board is reporting that U B and CLEVELAND STATE will be the final two teams added to next year's Paradise Jam.
