I've been puzzled by some of the antipathy re the Paradise Jam field. Bradley is the defending Valley champion, solid mid-major. Weber State among the Big Sky elite. The Beach plays one of the most competitive schedules annually. Throw in Cleve St and our probation pal UB and it's a decent field. Not too shabby, I'd say. It appears to some on this board that if we don’t have Duke or Kentucky at home, we didn’t try hard enough.

Duke or Kentucky? Are you serious. I just want to see SBU play some quality teams.
Here are the teams in the league that could face SBU.
Net Ranking
102 - Bradley 140 - Little Rock 146 - Buffalo 193 - FIU 273 - Weber State 304 - Cleveland State 306 - Long Beach State
Its a JOKE! How are you going to defend it? Weber State (273 NET) / Cleveland State (304). Absolute JOKE!
Seems like the tournaments are getting worse every year.

Kentucky or Duke would be nice, but this is the Paradise Jam tournament.
In 2002 St Bonaventure knocked off Michigan and Virginia Tech to make it to the Paradise Jam Championship where we lost to BYU. Marques Green was tournament MVP. Some of us even remember this —
In the 2020 version of this tournament, if they have it, maybe we play Weber State.
That’s why people are disappointed

I have no interest in scheduling Iona. We don’t need four MAAC schools on the schedule. Why? Iona will be better then any of the teams the Bonnies are playing in that Paradise Jam. I would welcome Iona every year as long as Rick is the coach. I said why. We don't need four MAAC schools on the schedule. That is too many--especially when they are all home/home deals. I am not willing to drop Niagara/Canisius/Siena to pick up a series with Iona. Even though Iona may end up being better (depends how long Pitino is there which is really the wildcard), I don't see them being a big draw to the RC. I don't think the RC sells out a weeknight game just because Pitino is coaching.

The Paradise Jam field is not what it was expected to be. But that isn't the fault of the staff at Bonas. They were proactive in getting into a great event years in advance. That is what you need to do to get into a top event. They did the right thing, it just didn't pan out. Here is a post I made last year about it and I will repeat some of it below... bonabandwagon.proboards.com/post/204502 The event isn't bad. It just isn't great. It still is a great destination and the Bonnies could get two Quad2 games out of it.

Seems like the tournaments are getting worse every year. FYI: Expect them to get worse. The rule on the multi-team events has changed so that Power Conference teams don't have to schedule as many games within events. This will likely make it easier to keep the Bonnies out of events that include the top teams. The Atlantic 10 was one of the conferences that formally opposed the rule change. OLD RULE: - Play up to 27 regular-season games and participate in a multiple-team event that includes up to four games; OR - Play up to 29 games and not participate in a multiple-team event. NEW RULE: - Play up to 28 regular-season games and participate in one multiple-team event that includes up to three games; OR - Play 29 regular-season games and a multiple-team event that includes up to two games; OR - Play 29 regular-season games and not participate in a multiple-team event.

How about a home and home with Valparaiso or Loyola of Chicago now that we have Chicago talent?

A bit of history. 1961, the Bonnies were rolling, the #3 ranked Bonnies, were going to MSG to take on #2 ranked Bradley, led by Chet the jet walker, the Bonnies destroyed them 75-61, and got to be ranked #2, of course we partisan fans felt that annihilating #2 should have yielded a #1 ranking, but #1 was Ohio State which had beaten us 84-82 earlier in the season.
There are certain stories behind the win, whether truthful or not, about food poisoning for some members of the Bradley team... one of these days I will have to research.

How about a home and home with Valparaiso or Loyola of Chicago now that we have Chicago talent? Neither have been interested. Loyola has much better options available to them. They aren't going to make a trip to Olean. They currently have home/home deals with St. Joe's, Davidson, DePaul, and they just signed on to play in the 2022 Atlantis tournament.

Most of them all play in preseason tournaments. What are you even talking about. Look at it. This tournament is a JOKE. Its a laugh RIOT. I wouldn't even have my team go. Even Siena (yea that powerhouse) is playing in a better tournament (much much much better).

I am talking about the change to the scheduling requirements that was just approved this week that is going to impact events moving forward. There will be a decrease in three game tournaments and an increase in two game tournaments. This change will decrease the opportunities for teams like the Bonnies to get into a bracket with power conference teams. Siena is playing in the Orlando Invitational for the same reason Southern Miss played in the Battle 4 Atlantis this past season--their conference runs the tournament and keeps one slot reserved to be used by a team in their conference. Which is why Fairfield was it in last year, Canisius the year before, and Marist the year before that. It has nothing to do with their pedigree.

JP's article "Bonnies' non-league schedule beginning to take shape." From article -- A kind of scheduling formula has emerged: Big 4 rivals and Siena, home games against quality mid-majors, an in-season event and one road game against a “Power 5” foe. That’s the form the Bonnies’ 2020-21 non-conference schedule is beginning to take. -- Bona, as previously announced, will take part in the 2020 Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands. -- Will also play its traditional rivals, with home games against Canisius, Siena and UB and a road contest versus Niagara. -- Bona was chosen to be part of the inaugural Mountain West-Atlantic 10 Challenge, where a road game at New Mexico awaits, and will get a return date from Middle Tennessee after playing the Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro, Tenn., last December. -- MATT PAPPANO, noted Bona has two contracts in place for home games against mid-major teams that won their conferences last season. One of those opponents, per CBS’ Jon Rothstein, is Yale. -- He also said Bona is looking for two more games — which would put it at the maximum 13, including three in the Paradise Jam — one of which would come on the road against a high-major. www.oleantimesherald.com/olean/bonnies-non-league-schedule-beginning-to-take-shape/article_fa5f271b-9ae5-5787-ae4b-ec23bcd186d2.html

This tournament is a JOKE. Its a laugh RIOT. I wouldn't even have my team go. Could you list the tournaments that aren't jokes? I think it would be good to have a firm list from you of the ones you'd take the team to since you think it is better to play a 29 game season than to play 31 games if the event isn't up to your standards.
