It is incredible how the average money spent by a conference correlates with its ranking. There was only one outlier with Conference USA.
Some interesting findings
-- Gonzaga is always #1 in these mid major polls. They might be in a mid major conference, but Gonzaga spends money like a Power 6 program. Gonzaga's $8.87 million budget is more than double its conference average. Gonzaga's budget is more than Michigan, Virginia, Purdue and many other schools from Power 6 conferences.
-- Dayton gets excellent return on the money they spend. Dayton has 86th highest budget, but is 24th in revenue.
-- A-10 has 4 schools with basketball budgets more than $5 million. Ranked in order VCU, Dayton, St. Louis and UMass.
-- A-10 has 4 schools with basketball budgets less than $3.5 million. Ranked in order Bona, LaSalle, GW and Davidson.
There are a few coaches like Schmidt and Davidson's McKillop who outperform their school's small budget. But overall a school and conference performance is determined by how much money is spent on basketball.
