"People make fun of teenagers for this kind of thing, but the emotions of fandom are so pure! The root of the word "fanatic" is "fanum" -- meaning "temple," a place where zealots come to worship. Every fan has their deity"
This great quote is from Sheila OMalley's movie review of "Blinded by the Light". A movie I just watched because it invovlved Bruce Springsteen (first third of the movie I was ready to turn it off, the last two thirds were great if you are a Boss fan). But when I read the above quote, I immediately thought about a passion of mine/ours - Bona Basketball and the RC. I am too young to have seen any games at the Armory, and hopefully will pass before another facility replaces the RC. Bona Basketball was so much of my social life during my 4 years, and it is one of the things I will try to juggle my schedule 39 years later still to see or watch. And it is just a bonus that the Boss actually played there during my 4 year "run".
And I know everyone reading this has the same wish that I have, that our "Temple" opens this late Fall. And that the Bona "zealots" are allowed to come and worship. Go Bonas, go medical research!

I might have attended the same Boss concert as you, Dadster. Four hours worth of electrifying rock by the E-Streeters. The Big Fella CC whalin' away on his sax. Great times.

ohs - Found this online. The song I remember the most from the concert was "Pointblank". Maybe cause I never had heard it before. Funny story about the tickets. Turk and I were in charge of buying like 8 tix for recent grads, plus our classmates. We were NOT going to camp out at RC like fans were doing. So the first day the tix went on sale, we went down to Allegheny Records. We were second people in line, ended up with tix right in the fist set of bleachers right next to the stage. Great seats.

Funny that Because the Night is listed as a Patti Smith cover. She obviously had the big hit with it, but Bruce did write the song.

123Rob - I thought the same thing. I knew a little about the Boss before I came to Bonas, but with all the Jersey kids at school, that quickly changed and I became a big fan. My kids are not (despite my efforts) although my daughter's boyfriend is a big Southside Johnny fan, so that definitely scored some points with me.

Dadster- I've never been a huge fan but my wife is a "jersey girl" so My appreciation of Bruce has grown. Speaking of the covers there are some really good ones out there that I like better that Bruce. Paul Carrack's "If I Should Fall Behind" is great. I am a few years too young so I missed Bruce and Billy Joel at Bona's. we were stuck with the Romantics and the Bruce/Southside knockoffs John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band

Great stuff . And going back to the early 60’s Pre RC , we had a fantastic Peter, Paul and Mary concert at the Olean Armory for a Fall Festival , followed by The Lettermen in the spring . But for sheer energy back then it was hard to top the Isley Brothers at a beer fueled Spring Festival at Gargoyle Park . Ah, yes....

Went to SBU same years as 123Rob. Had a couple of good comedians at the RC. Robert Klien was good as was Robin Williams, both I believe were on Parents Weekend.
My roommate was so wasted for the Robim Williams show, he disrupted things by shouting " do Popeye with a hard on"

Don’t think bona has had concerts the past few years Last RC concert was Mike Posner in 2011 Geez - I had to google the name. Never heard of him. Times have changed, the fees that bands charge has gone way up, the RC venue is not as attractive to bands as it used to be, and maybe the student interest has really fallen. During my four years, we had Bruce (which is a record that will probably never be broken as far as star on campus), Doobie Bros (still big when they came to campus, America (there career was on the downside, show was mediocre), and Pure Prairie League made it(big on the college circuit at the time) but their instruments did not - they were snowed out. Drank with some of the band members down in the Skellar. We used to have at least one big show a year. Plus one year we had a great Rolling Stones Tribute band, and they served beer - that was a rough following morning.

Wow. Was Vince Gill in PPL at the time? We did get 10,000 Maniacs just before they hit it big. It wasn't a concert but a Halloween party/ dance and they were the band.

I forgot he was with PPL, since he was not with them when they recorded their big hits. Checked with Wikpedia, and yes he would have been at the RC - drinking.
10,000 Maniacs - Jamestown's finest. That was probably a great show, Natalie twirling around. My wife is a huge fan, and we have seen her twice over the last few years, she is still great but does not dance as much (although at each concert she did kick off her shoes about half way thru so she could spin more). At the last concert, she took requests from the crowd for several songs, which was pretty cool.
