Its been 4 mos, which seems like an eternity, since our guys put up a shot on Bob Lanier Court.
They must be ecstatic getting back together and doing what they have a passion for. I expect that their opportunity to develop their game, over this period of time, was minimal at best. Virtual strength work outs with Coach Fiske is a poor substitute for being in the weight room with teammates. Some time ago, OSUN said he had not shot at a basket in months. Lots of rust to wear off and the potential for injury will be greater. I'm sure that the Staff has developed a protol quite different than past summers to get them into game shape.
Lost time must be made up but with a sensible plan mindful that their bodies have lacked competitive action for the first time in their lives unless sidelined by injury.
I can hear the sound of basketballs in the RC and that thrills me.

The number one priority has to be getting guys into shape in order to avoid injuries... this sort of layoff could cause a bunch of nagging health problems with the players outside of the pandemic, so it’ll be important for Coach Fiske and team to do their very best if there is a season... all that said, great that the team is back together and building chemistry... it could be a very exciting couple of years for the program!

Unfurled had linked to this story through Twitter I was unsure where it should land, but this is good a spot as any as we move forward. From what I can tell the author might have slighted Coach Schmidt in his review of top coaches in the A 10, that did not include Mark. In some ways it's the writer's way of saying I missed this guy in my top tier of A10 coaches. I consider myself a Bonnie fan, but I guess I lost track of the program after the 2000 NCAA team, I attribute it to raising 3 kids and being more attune to their world. I knew of the scandal, I was working in higher ed a the University of Minnesot. We had a scandal of our own where staff were found guilty of writing papers for student athletes. I did not know about the Bona regent who died, feeling that he was partially to blame. That all being said, Coach Schmidt, his coaches and the players that followed them to Bonas have written one hell of a script. bustingbrackets.com/2020/07/21/st-bonaventure-basketball-how-mark-schmidt-saved-the-bonnies/

Agreed, call it poorly researched, lazy, etc. However, if Dom can slightly increase 3 ball % and go from his 11 to about 15 ppg, I could get on board with him being considered our breakout player. However, I think the better options are either Justin or AJ, imho.

The least an article can do is get well publicized stats correct. Article says "Welch finished fifth on the team in scoring at 7.5 points per game last season." For the record Dom finished 2nd with 367 points and was 3rd with 11.8 ppg, which is one-tenth of a point less than Jaren at 11.9 ppg. If this person would have done some research, he would of picked Justin Winston as his "break out player." -- Do you realize Planutis averaged more minutes per game than Justin? Planutis averaged 20.6 to Justin's 20.2 minutes per game. -- Justin led the Bonnies in scoring at 17.2 points per 40 minutes. Of returning players Justin is 3rd leading rebounder per 40 minutes. Both stats dramatically increased during A-10 games. -- OOC games Justin averaged 7.8 ppg. A-10 games Justin averaged 9.3 ppg. -- For the last 10 games Justin averaged 11.0 ppg and 4.5 rpg. Justin shot a very impressive 48.9% from the field in the last 10 games. www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/st-bonaventure/2020.htmlgobonnies.sbu.edu/sports/m-baskbl/2019-20/files/SBU_A10_3820.pdf

Now that he's back on campus, Double-O can work on his shooting, post moves, boarding, etc. Plenty of time for all of Our Guys to develop their game, esp since we're looking at a Jan '21 sked start.

With the 4 mos lay off I expect our players skills have regressed. It will take some time to get back to the level they were at in March.
Chuck points out how Justin progressed during the season as his effectiveness increased in A10 play. A very good sign.
Last season Dom showed a desire to attack the rim that was completely missing his first year. I'm sure staff urged him to do so since he has the quickness & hops (7.8 rebs)to finish. Still only 16% of his points came from the stripe compared to Jaren who had 28% of his points from the line as he piled up fouls on opposing players.
Dom loves the outside shot (34% Treys) but I think he will attack the rim even more this season with success. He converted 47% of his shots inside the arc. That will also create more space for his trey.

There was a tweet from Chuck M;
Told today that nine of the 12 Bona men’s players are on campus, while the other three are expected to arrive before the semester starts.
Which 3- players?

As of last Thursday, one was AJ Vasquez who was awaiting test results before he could leave home. Another was one of the JUCO's who was finishing up classwork. Not sure who was the third one.
