Earlier this week, in response to an uptick in COVID cases in Western NY, the State set up eight rapid testing sites for residents in the region. I wanted to share some of the results with you. From the testing team's effort, a total of 6,385 tests were performed with results delivered in 15 minutes. A total of 266 positive cases were identified, for an infection rate of 4.1 percent. While this was not random testing (it was a self-selected group), the situation in Western NY is nevertheless serious, and residents should exercise increased caution. The State Department of Health will lend 20 rapid testing machines to local health departments in Western NY and continue to carefully monitor the infection rate of the region. Let's all do our part to make sure the virus doesn't spread and our infection rate remains low. If you have COVID symptoms or believe you may have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID, get tested.

So ... Perfectly healthy 18-25 year olds are tested for a virus that they have no symptoms for (and have less risk of dying from than driving to and from campus)- a few test positive tests result - and the response is to shutdown everthing immediately ...
Is that following the Science or Dystopian madness ?
Talk amongst yourselves (Please - No attacks as none have been rendered here)
Definition of Dystopian : of, relating to, or being an imagined world or society in which people lead dehumanized, fearful lives

From Unfurled, via Mike Hogan, I'll admit I don't know who Mike Hogan is. Anyway....St Bonaventure University broke up a large on campus gathering last night at Garden Apartments. Hearing that it was around 60 people and the University is forcing most(if not all) students who were there to turn in their keys by 7pm )today).
Hard to know if this is true, having worked in student services for 30+ years I'd have to think that there could be some truth to the story, but will wait to here what Bonas puts out in the official word if there is a press release forthcoming.
Disappointing, if true, everyone, students and the school have a lot riding on getting through fall semester with in person teaching.
I saw that Northeastern, in Bostton, identified 11 students who were partying off campus and promptly expelled them, with no tuition refund. Northeastern's response was that all students had signed a contract to uphold these community rules and violations, could lead to expulsion.

And I call bs. You might say you have made no attack, and that's technically true. But, you certainly have staked your claim, and in an annoyingly passive-aggressive way.

I hope none of them were basketball players. Not a real smart thing to do.

I hope none of them were basketball players. Not a real smart thing to do. what difference does it make?...if a small minority of Bonnies continue to make stupid, reckless choices there's not gonna be any basketball season...or baseball or soccer...or any other sport...you speak about basketball players...now would be an excellent time for a basketball player (or players) or any other student-athlete to be a leader and challenge those who they know are most like to make the stupid, reckless choices to knock it off and don't screw everything up for us who to want to play (and those who want to watch us play)...

Assume it was upper classmen due to where they were living.....which makes it worse in my opinion.

IMHO, it is ridiculous to expect 18-22 year old kids to live on a college campus without "gathering". As BONA 82.5 stated, the virus poses very little risk (no more so than the flu, certainly) to this age group. I think every effort should be made to maintain a bubble on campus where the students can have a semester that is as close to "normal" as possible while making accommodations for those that may be at higher risk.
I understand this approach is untenable in the world we're living in, but to me that is a sad commentary on the world rather than a condemnation of the approach.
Common sense is dying a slow death.
Go Bonnies!

The above posts shows the fundamental problem. First, no one really knows the long term effects of this virus are unknown. The health officer for Penn State reported that 30% of athletes who tested positive in the BIG10 had enlarged hearts which could be a long term problem. Second, even if young people do not have a difficult time - they can spread it to those at risk - like professors, administrators and staff. I don’t know of anyone who had the flu who was placed on a ventilator. The comparison is just not based on fact. Kids are inherently social - so I agree that it is a tough ask to expect they will not gather. In my opinion, the people who think this is no big deal have been fortunate to never have experienced a serious illness.

agree with turk182, the idea that someone would "invite" non Bona students shows disregard for the Bona community.
