JP stated “Rumpel shined as bright as the opposition, which featured five-star 2022 recruits Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren.” I was stunned to see the talent Brett played against and to imagine “Rumpel shined as bright as the opposition” is really impressive if not incredible. It probably is the reason Brett recently gained P-5 interest. Checkout the starting lineup for AAU team Team Final. Jalen Duren is Rivals #1 ranked player, Emoni Bates Rivals #2, Dereck Lively #14, Justice Williams #35 and Corey Floyd #109. Jaren Duren and Emoni Bates are expected to be one and done (to the NBA). So much about the theory Brett hasn’t played against good competition. Initially I thought it was ridiculous for JP to say following about Brett “it was only fitting, then, that Bona polished off its 2021 recruiting class with as big a pledge as any that have come before it.” I thought it was too far over the top for me to include this JP quote in my post. Now I think it probably is an accurate statement. Brett's signing is the exact type of signing I would expect Schmidt to be willing to use his precious 13th scholarship. www.oleantimesherald.com/sports/bonnies-land-star-binghamton-guard-rumpel/article_f5549b5e-e9cf-5f71-b8c2-5d498fe03562.html

if he works on his three point shooting i think he will be pretty good. He goes to the hole well and he also drives and dishes. The only thing that seems to be lacking is his 3 point shot.

These were his stats part way thru his junior year at Seton Catholic. His trey #s got better. I'll send more current stats later. Over 21 games this season: 34.5 ppg, 54% FGs, 30% TREYS, 74% FTs, 9.6 rebs, 4 steals, 1.7 blocks.

As always Chuck, right on the money. Would love to know how many 3 point plays he orchestrated and completed with a trip to the foul line. Betcha it is close to double his long 3 pointers. The kids handle while on the fly and his instincts and vision amaze me.

I thought his stroke looked good in the highlights and at 6'4", he shouldn't have too much trouble getting them off. Sounds like he'll be just fine shooting 3s.

Love that he jumped at the chance to join now and recognized he liked staying local.

This kid has magic hands, a great instinct for shooting and passing, and outstanding range. He does remind long time fans of one of the best Bona freshman shooters of all time - John Hayes from Bishop Duffy in Niagara Falls. Hayes '69, who played on the undefeated 1968 team, still holds the all time frosh single game scoring record of 66 points accomplished in the 1965-66 season. Hayes career was limited by two knee injuries.
Brett will be a starter in 12 months, mark it down.

I thought John Hayes holds the scoring record at Niagara Falls High School Trust me, yes, NFHS (not Duffy)--I was there--as I posted a few days ago re: some similarities with Brett.

Beyond Brett’s impressive basketball skills, stats, athleticism and etc. I’m really impressed with his attitude and maturity. I’m sure Brett has heard it multiple times that his stats are a reflection of playing against weak competition from small schools. His impressive play in AAU has generated interest from P-5 programs. Extreme majority of high school basketball players would be excited about the new fame and at the least would want to know how many P-5 offers they could receive.
I’ve become a big fan of Brett with his answer to why he chose Bona now instead of waiting “I already have a great situation… It’s close to home; it’s got a great coaching staff; ranked top 25 this year; it’s had a lot of success over the years. It was a great option to go there and I took it.” Top it all off with Brett being alright with a red shirt year, if coach Schmidt decides this is best for him.
Thank you Chuckie for a great article.
