Nice win over the Dukes. They always seem to play the Bonnie’s tough. Perhaps we should invite Lethal Shooter” Chris Mathews to come in for a shooting clinic - youtu.be/-pTrRgEUC_A

Good win but have to be concerned about 1) Kyle's ankle 2) Dom's shot and did I say 3) Kyle's ankle? Kyle’s ankle is a big problem for this team. He cannot drive, or cut which makes him such an effective player. He is two steps slow on D as a result as well. The outside shooting is frightening. Have not seen this many airballs since my daughters middle school game in 2014. I am hopeful they can get back to form.

KYLE's ankle has him playing as a shadow of himself. 2nd game in a row he has not slashed with authority and drawn fouls. He typically gets to the stripe with regularity. He is relegated to playing a very different and less effective game. His one foul tonight was an intentional as he stood 35 ft from the basket with a couple of mins left.
JAREN finally missed a FT. First of season 26-27. Missed his 2nd at 4:10 up 5 pts. BUT the Dukes never drew closer.
We outscored their BENCH 2-0 !
No surprise we are a different team with KYLE hampered. Yet we would not relinquish the slim lead as the Dukes felt they had seized the momentum. We answered back with timely scores to extend the lead.
44-24 PIP is domination of the paint thanks to OSUN. Solid with the ball. Only 9 TOs
Keeping the DUKES to 14 below their point average might be the start of playing far better D we have shown we can.

Buffalo up by ten with seconds left. Siena loses. Canisius wins.

Most dominating game in a Bonaventure uniform since Bob Lanier vs. Seton Hall in 1970 ( in my humble opinion ) by Shoon #21. This performance should not be bypassed by the Bona faithful since the Dukes played a very competitive game. Seth Greenberg said it best "someone should lay a body on him".

It’s a nice win on the road, but anyone with half a brain can see this team is not playing up to its potential. Lots of little stuff and inconsistencies plague us. Covid and the long layoff play a role but this was happening way before the layoff.
Kyle’s play reminds me of Jay Adams’ with senior year ankle problems. Jay’s quickness and speed was hampered at several points throughout his final season. Jay had some amazing games but struggled at times on both ends. Kyle is giving it all he has but paying 40 minutes doesn’t allow any time for healing or improvement. It is perplexing because he had 4 weeks to rest and recover.
Dom and Jaren are inconsistent. Jaren was solid and clutch vs Duquesne. Dom plays great D and hits a key shot every now and then. Not sure of the reason why we don’t see consistence offensive excellence from them.
Often I think playing in this same complicated offense and logging 38+ minutes each game wears on our Iron 5 mentally. They’ve played so many games and not everyone seems to keep motivated and aggressive every game. We seldom push the ball and look for easy buckets. Everything is a grind on both ends.
The team as a whole has not been able to take that big leap we and all the experts were expecting. We will be competitive in the A10 and could win the tourney — but not sure if or how we get to the Sweet 16 or Round of 32 level if we don’t get more help from the bench.
As individuals there isn’t significant improvement other than Adaway’s offensive game (mainly outside shooting) and Shoon’s big performances every 3 or 4 games. Defense is not as good. Shooting is poor.
It is nearly impossible to advance in the NCAA tourney by being a poor 3 point shooting team and a poor 3 Pt defense. We are among the worst teams nationally in 3 Pt offense and defense. That is a horrible combo.
I love these guys and our staff. Maybe we are a month away from reaching our peak, getting more production from the bench — and this will look like the most absurd post of the year.

As for Osun's game I will describe like this --- one of his best in a Bonaventure uniform --- slam-a-jama.
Go Bonnies

I turned Seth Greenberg off 5 minutes in and went to Gary and Don. Greenberg starts talking and before you know it he's off topic and on to some story. The game was synched very well with the PIG. 11-4, 3-1 despite not playing our best game. I'm hoping we run the table until Davidson in 10 days. Would like a shot at them with a full house at the RC. A bus ride over from Erie like VCU might be a good way to welcome the Cats to Olean in Feb.

I have to say - I have come to enjoy reading the "in game" posts the following morning after a game. Some of you should be eating a heaping bowl of CROW this morning. Here's what I saw : A poised and confident BONA squad that came to play and brought home a W. I never sensed panic in the boys - this game was ours from the start. OSUN was a BEAST - expect to see more of that from him going forward. Jalen and Jaren were ROCKs as well. DOM's game was more Taquee-esk - still searching for that 3 point touch that we all know is there. KYLE - He contributed by NOT trying to do too much. He was more of a decoy on many possessions. His mere presence on the floor has a settling effect on the team. He calmly knocked down a late 3 to help seal the victory ... His ankle is clearly not 100%. My one criticism of Schmidt was him having Kyle guard Spears. A tough matchup any night - but especially on a bum ankle. Expect the boys to be 5-1 / 13-4 overall heading into the FEB 1st showdown with Davidson @ the RC. Winning the A-10 regular season title will secure an at large BID and that should be our primary goal.
KEEP GRINDING & LETS GO BONAS
WE GOT THIS

Would really like to know how Dom shoots in practice. 25 day lay off .....didn't he practice shooting? Has to be mental. With out 3 point shot has turned into Taquee which isn't a bad thing but not what is expected from a 4th year shooter.

Jaren Holmes is 60-77 from FT line on the season not 26-27 like wgt stated.

Other than when he plugs for the A10 , I find his commentary to be 75 % Captain Obvious and 25% Story Time ... Not sure if he truly believes what he is saying about the A10, or if he is just reading it from an ESPN "hype the game" Script . He does sell it pretty well though - I'll give him that much.

Most hit the front of the rim and sail away. Imho he should watch comparable video between last season and last night to see the flaw(s) in his stroke.

82.5, it can't be as fun for Kyle when he is only a "decoy" on offence. But high ankle sprains are hard to heal from and his was quite severe. The mind us willing but the body can't follow. His situation does limit Bona in the half-court game.
Shoon was HUGE last night, but I believe Jaren was the hero w two huge baskets in crunch time that kept Bona in control.
As you noted, one of the pluses to the win was the poise Our Guys showed. They did not get flustered or panic when the lead dwindled to three with a ton of time left. That is where their experience paid off.
Have to say I'm pessimistic about Bona's chances against the Davidson juggernaut, even at home. They have a guard trio (Lee, Loyer, Jones) that can shoot lights out from deep. Cats shoot in the 50s overall and deep regularly. It will be a true defensive test, one for which Bona will have their work cut out.
I hope Our Guys can elevate their mid-range and perimeter pcts between now and then.
