t's that time of year. I am thinking we may here something in the next month or so, about enrollment commitments for Fall, 2023. We're coming off two really good years and it would be great if we could keep the momentum going. Having worked n higher ed, and also having heard one of the Board of Trustees speak about the Bolder Bonaventure push, which is also a very positive thing. The calendar year 2025 is circled for many institutions of higher education in that that's the year when it's predicted that the lowest number of college eligible students will turn 18 years of age. Operating then with a much smaller pool of potential high school graduates will put even greater pressure on enrollment numbers. A credit to Dr. DePiero, he could see this coming and could see the need to diversify degree offerings to include one of the few growth areas, health sciences. The other area that I believe Bonaventure has been active in, is the on line sector, particularly at the master's level. With finances continuing to be an issue for many students, the importance of making a smooth transition for transfer students will continue to be huge as well. Likewise the school's ability to attract students of Cologne of the few demographics that is increasing with respect to more students in the pipeline, by offering competitive financial aid packages, and just as importantly having the student support services/mentoring is also important not only in getting students in the door, but just as importantly retaining them and getting them on path to a degree. Again, Dr DePiero understood the importance of diversifying the campus and I believe it was one of the projects that was nearest to his heart. He established a scholarship fund for underserved student groups. A lot of balls to keep in the air, but hat's off to all involved who. are making it happen for St. Bonaventure.

I spoke who someone who works at Bonas. The most recent enrollment number emailed to staff was 580, with the numbers growing as they prepare for the next academic year. This is good news for SBU and the economic climate of the area.

I just watched the Zoom recording of Dr. Gingerich that went out over email and was curious to see if anyone was commenting on this. Super great news . . . and the Bolder Bonaventure campaign, new programs/facilities, good numbers, etc. I work overseas and both my wife and I are alums. One seemingly less tapped area for enrollment growth would be in terms of attracting international students to SBU. I have worked at multiple U.S. Embassy schools and several regional and upstate NY colleges/universities regularly send recruiters to our college fairs. There is a circuit of college reps traveling to all the big international schools around the world. The students are academically motivated, have financial means, and are motivated to attend university in the USA. Would love to one-day walk down to our quad and see someone reppin; SBU Go Bonas!

Absolutely wonderful news here......this is a great tribute to the outstanding work of our past President Dennis DePerro and to his right hand administrator Dr. Joe Zimmerman who really started Bonas on a new path into the Allied Health fields. Accolades to the members of the BoT who selected Dennis to be our President in the first place. We will see if the new guy can hopefully continue this remarkable trend! Just avoid the woke BS!

While I have not seen anything from the University, the numbers alluded to above, 580 new commits, if correct is outstanding. Particularly if Bonaventure continues to get more new commits in the coming days. Agree wholeheartedly with Mad dog, tapping into international students Interest in pursuing a degree at a US college university is a win-win situation for all parties involved. It seemingly would be worthwhile to send a recruiter on the circuit of international student college fairs. Something to keep in mind with the international student population is that it’s also important , If we recruit international students we also need the support Netwerk from a student services standpoint, of people who have experience working with that population. Likewise, it’s important to be upfront with international students about their prospect for gaining internships/job opportunities in the US, which can be challenging to say the least. On the plus side we do have a strong alumni network.
Not wanting to rain on the parade, great work from all parties involved in the recruiting effort.

Very surprised no one on the Bandwagon posted this good news. Oh, that’s right, good news on the Bandwagon - doesn’t happen very often.
Former Dresser-Rand CEO plans a a startup company at the former Dresser site. The plan is to use the testing facility. Currently around 10 employees laying the ground work and the projection is to add about 100 jobs.
With the steel plant projecting hiring approximately 250 workers, the cheese plant in Franklinville employing over 500 people and the new start up at Dresser this is very positive economic news. Throw in the fact Bonas will have close to 600 new students on campus the economic outlook for the area isn’t dead. No need to turn out the lights! The Olean area is better off than most communities in the Southern Tier. This is a start and hopefully more good news down the road. Always room for improvement.
Oh, here is your bad news you have been waiting for - rumor on Facebook is Arby’s will not be coming to the Olean area as the cost of the project significantly increased. Shit , the sky is falling. Time to close up shop. No Arby’s! Boo f’ing hoo! I heard the AD was behind the move of Arby’s not coming to the area.

Ziggy states " I heard the AD was behind the move of Arby’s not coming to the area. " I usually don't agree with you but, this time you are correct !
The AD doesn't even show up to meet new recruits. WTF
From 2004 the Greater Olean Community has lost over 6000 jobs.
As for the new Cheese Factory and the projects at the old Dresser Plant " I hope so " .
We will just have to see how it all works out once everything is said and done.
BRING BACK TIM KINNEY.
And Joe were in the hell is our new Pickleball Courts? Gomer

Gomer Socal, you need to get off the Ponderosa! Last night, continuing today… Strolean… downtown was packed last night with people! The hoopsters are in town for Gus Macker… over 125 teams! The biggest problem in Olean last night was finding a table at one of the many fine restaurants to have a fish fry. Take a ride to Franklinville and see that “Cheese Factory”, it is huge! A welcome addition for the area. I’d write more, but hey, I got to get to the Farmers Market .

SoCal states “Fact remains is the City has lost thousands jobs and people over the last 20 years along with craftsmen” and “Greater Olean Community has lost over 6000 jobs since 2004.” The fact is since 2004, Olean’s population has decreased by just 998. From the US Census Bureau: Olean’s population in 2004 (14,784). Last Olean’s census was 2021(13,786). Interesting to note the graph has shown Olean gain population is the last few years. SoCal and I have a different perspective of Olean. Probably a result of our experiences. He was born and raised in Olean and now lives in Florida, visiting Olean a few months in the summer. I moved to Olean in 1984 and have made Olean my home. His memory of Central Hotel and Wooden Nickel are not the same as mine. Both were eye sores and have been replaced by much more attractive businesses. Central Hotel has been replace with Jamestown Community College. Downtown Olean looks a lot better than it did in 1984. Strangely SoCal comments to Cheese Factory and Dresser is just “I hope so.” Construction on both have already begun. — Great Lake Cheese broke ground in April 2022 and expects to be completed in early 2024. Great Lakes “will add 200 new jobs while offering jobs to the 226 workers at the current Cuba site.” — CIMOLIA-HY has purchased Dresser Clark/Siemen. They have started renovating the property in February. The plant is currently undergoing a $56 million renovation. “Cimolai plans to hire more than 230 employees including about 200 welders and other craftsmen in 2025.” — Vince Volpe former CEO of Dresser has negotiated a lease with the new owner of the former Dresser-Rand site, Cimolai-HY. “Volpe is already at work with about 10 employees readying the compressor testing facility for use. The new company, which could employ as many as 100 people.” Olean is an attractive vibrant small city. It is making an impressive rebound from the rust belt days, which SoCal fondly remembers. www.dairyherd.com/news/business/great-lakes-cheese-breaks-ground-500-million-new-york-plantwww.oleantimesherald.com/news/former-dresser-rand-ceo-plans-startup-in-olean/article_ddd92400-ff3f-11ed-9638-c7fb31f96934.html

All thanks to the leadership team of the late Dr. Dennis DePerro and Dr. Joe Zimmerman and AD Tim Kenney........Dennis led us to a new era at Bonas. These guys are sorely missed, they had great vision for our future, especially with the allied health majors! Without their great efforts I am not sure where we would be at this point.................... Anyway rejoice for their tremendous accomplishments!
