With 6,000 students Buffalo State is three times the size of Sbu It seems that it might be a plus ,or might have been a plus at some point to combine the two but the two serve different student bodies and purposes The new tittle is a stud/ marketing action...maybe d- 1 sports comes next. South Dakota did it.

Noting buff state is a larger “U” than bona and that since both of the state schools are in Buffalo it seems to make since to combine them, but they are very different from each other.

The article makes it clear this is a marketing ploy to try and save the school from the fate of so many local schools, which is to merge or close. I seriously doubt a name change will do enough to overcome a $16M budget deficit. If I was a NYS resident and taxpayer I would be in favor of that instead of the next most likely solution, a demand for a major increase in state funding.

Don’t think buff state is in any danger of closing.

the state should merge and scale back significantly on SUNY schools. I agree that the answer is not give more taxpayer funding to Buffalo State and Fredonia State when they are running $16 mill in deficits
merge/close the failing ones, consolidate and invest in a flagship like Stony Brook or Albany

Governments make money back on taxes from the higher wages that college graduates earn. Those places are running $16 mil deficits on paper this year, but in the long run those graduates who stay in state are paying they money back.
Investment in public education is worthwhile.

Well duh I'm not saying cut out SUNY all together. But do we need SUNY-Amherst, Buffalo State and SUNY-Fredonia all trying (unsuccessfully) to keep afloat in the same area competing against one another? I dont think so

I dont think so Is there really a need for all these campuses? Well of course there is not.............its a huge drain on NYS taxpayers. Tuition and R and B need to be increased substantially, SUNY is now a sump hole of money and woke far left anti christian ideology. The positive aspect of SUNY is the CC's which bring job skills to students, and launch careers, like Jamestown CC. The other positive is the economic impact on small communities like Fredonia and Alfred and Geneseo...............many jobs in maintenance and infrastructure are created for local folks.

Regarding the SUNYs, it's worth noting that the deficits are structural ones. The state pulled back funding with the 2008 crash and never restored it. The state sets limits on tuition. Hence, if doesn't matter how many students go there, the deficits will keep rising. The state only contributes about 15 percent to the running of the SUNY schools.
I work for a SUNY, so it's something I have a vested interest in. I believe both public and private universities have their benefits.
